Unwaxed ammo

Post by jjpl »

I bought a half case of Wolf MT to try in my Winchester 52, and immediately understood how much ammo can affect grouping (I had been plinking with bulk-packed Federal Auto Match). Since then, I've purchased a Weatherby XXII that has seen only the Wolf ammo, and I am willing to avoid cheap stuff if it prevents leading the barrel, etc. Is it detrimental to the action/bore to fire the cheap unwaxed ammo when I'm plinking or just messing around? I have cases of Fiochi JHP Subsonic for my AR22, and this would be a far cheaper way to practice/plink if it does no harm. Thoughts?

It takes a tight fitting patch to pull lead out of the barrel, and I avoid brushes in .22's, but there's no permanent harm that I know of.

Thanks. The Fiocchi's grouped decently when I fired them though my Winchester (at least at 50 yards) so it's good to know that I can continue to use them when I'm just messing around.

The lead can always be taken out of the barrel. Don't worry about it.

Just a little bit of High Heat Pam works wonders on cheap ammunition, just dump it in a bag, give it a shot, close the bag and shake to coat. Just a little bit goes a long way - I've even used the residue in the bag to coat another batch so it really does take just a little bit.

Excuse my newbie question, but do you take the pork chop out of the bag before you shake and shoot?

Hammy...it is the dolphin fillet you have to take out the bag first.

OK, sounds like we've decided on the lunch menu for the Sunshine State Games, May 2 at the HRPC. We might even do a little shooting...

You can shake fillets & ammunition together, the animal fat actually helps, just make sure all the ammunition is accounted for before cooking anything...
