Thought that I would share some photo's of the changes that were made to my 504. My gunsmith Evelio McDonald here in Houston, TX pulled the bushing that the rear action screw goes into. Under it was a 5/16NC thread. He then pillar bedded the action and free floated the barrel in the normal manner with no problems. He also installed a pulled Anschutz 1710 barrel that he rechambered with a tight match chamber. Major improvement in the way the gun shots. It now will shoot groups at 100 meters that before it could not do at 40 meters. Overall this has turn into a very good shooting rifle and will hold 3/4 tp 1" groups at 100 meters if you get good enough conditions. The results that we have so far are with SK ammo, with further testing wit may do even better.

Remschutz? Very nice work, as always from Evelio. I'm anxious to test my stock 504 after bedding it, but am reasonably sure it won't shoot as well! I am curios to know how well an all Remington 504, professionally tuned (as opposed to my fumbling attempts), would shoot. Hmmm... Maybe have it dropped in a Walnut Mark Pharr at the same time...

I have not decided but may install this in a Pharr RT/s stock just to say I have one. It would be interesting to see if it affected my score. My thought is if it is balanced correctly and in a good stock with a scope as good as on my Anschutz it would do just as well. What

Paul, I absolutely agree. Bolt, receiver, trigger group and magazine well are smooth and far stronger than necessary. Then they dropped it all in a nice American walnut stock with very tight inletting, possibly because Remington means the magazine well to function as a recoil lug. Finally, just to shoot themselves in the foot after getting everything else so right, they installed bad barrels in a high proportion of the first 4,000 produced and gave the 504 a bad reputation. Sheesh.

In my case, Remington has replaced the flawed barrel that originally came on the rifle with one that shoots very, very well, so I'd like to see the Remington barrel match chambered, crowned and head spaced. I really love the feel of these rifles and just haven't found the same comfort level with any other I've handled so far.

We like the feel of the 504 in the standing position. We shot CZ452 American Classics for many years when we started Silhouette. Then got more serious shooting a variety of Anschutz sporters and one 5418MSR. So we have a wide range of experience. We much prefer the feel of the 504 compared to the CZ452's. I am starting Matchs here in 2007 and will have beginners asking what equipment to buy? Remington 504's are in stock at local gun shops. Are the newer Factory 504 barrels up to snuff as far as 100 meter group size for Silhouette?

I don't have any first hand knowledge of the newer 504's, but understand the problem children have serial numbers under 50404000. If you're going to buy one, pull a patch through the barrel on fishing line and you can feel any burrs or voids it might have. If it's a smooth steady pull through, the rifle's probably fine.

Like I've said, Remington has been good about fixing mine, but it takes time.

Talked to some behind-the-counter types at Cabela's last week... said they would order a 504 for $499.95... OR the "Eley Match chambered 504" for $734.00. Sounds like Big Green may be getting up to speed. It would be a $234 pi$$er to order the high end and get the same old paradox choked, semi-smooth bore, 25yd killer-of-cans. Somebody order one and let us know how you come out.

Sounds like they quoted you a 504T that has a heavy barrel with very slight taper and laminated Silhouette style stock. Look great, but probably won't make weight for Hunter class. Sheesh - If I could afford it I'd order a new one just to check the barrel and put the guessing to rest.

I've seen a few of the Rem 504s for about $400 new. It would be better to just get one of those and put a barrel on it.

My method is a little different, Jason - I get a $400 504 and ask Remington to fix the barrel.

Remington fixing it and getting a custom barrel put on it aren't exactly in the same league, though. Even a "fixed" Remington barrel ain't gonna shoot like a custom, or balance like one.

Hence the "lets run em' heads up.........Sorry, I've been watdhing too much of "Pinks" on the speed channel over the holiday.........

When I first looked at the 504 action, it actually reminded me of the 40x action, the 504 is very sturdy, and it could be a hell of an action, that is the reason I change the barrel, and pillar bedded the action, on the existing stock, it went from 2'' at the chickens to one hole, and is shooting about 1'' to 1 1/2'' at rams, not the best but comparable to a lot of Annies.
Now after a lot more thinking, I should have put a recoil lug between the barrel and the action ( alas 1712 ).
If Rem. is replacing the barrels at no charge, these may be the gun to look at for begginers, and those that don't want to spend the money for an Anchutz.
We are still experimenting more, we may put a Lilja barrel, and a Parr stock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True - or cost like one. Ideally, send it to Evelio and politely ask him to put a Lilja barrel on it and fit it to a Pharr stock.
