At the match this weekend I was shooting a few videos and while running through them when I got home I noticed one shooter was taking off his glasses on the ready command. This got me thinking about the fact that while I wear glasses I am actually near sighted and can see things close in perfect detail. So the question now has become does a eye glass wearing near sighted shooter even need to wear the glasses while shooting in the first place? I have only done some quick testing of this last night holding on my dry fire dot without my glasses on and could see everything just fine but not my other eye which would normally be open is still open but it is almost as if I have on a diffuser over it.

So does anyone else have any experience with this type of thing and what has been your findings? I will be doing some shooting tonight to give it a real test run. The only issue I see is that I use my non shooting eye as my alignment aid when shouldering the rifle. If I look at the right target and shoulder the rifle I can see the animal with both eyes and almost locate on it directly as I shoulder the rifle. This will not be an option without glasses on so I will have to get the view in the scope and work from there if I go this route.

This past weekend it was 95% with 90% humidity otherwise known as a typical July day to us down here in the swamp. Trying to shoot with glasses can be a real pain in the @ss when it comes to lens fogging up and sweat running down the lens. The humidity between lens and eye is 100% it seems No glasses = no fog and no sweat on the lens at least is what I am thinking. Even using the anti-fog glass cleaner spray it just doesn't cut it for long and you're right back to hazing over.

I'll post my trial run findings later.

My scores really went up when I had lasik. I think that I was looking through a different part of the lens and shifted the apparent location of the target. With glasses I was 20/20, lasik did not work out well at 20/40, but I shoot better.

Dee, I am near sighted and when I shoot scoped rifles I do not use my prescription glasses as I do when I shoot rifles with iron sights, I only use regular shooting/safety glasses.
It is not a good idea to shoot any fire arms without shooting/safety glasses because even .22 rimfire cartridges have been known to rupture.
A lot of the clubs where I shoot will not let anybody shoot without eye and ear protection and at the Nationals it is mandatory that anybody that is at the firing line shooting or spotting has eye protection.

I have astigmatism, wear progressive tri-focals, and need the glasses to read scope settings, but then take them off to shoot. Pretty awkward.

i agree with Lone Ringers remarks, since Silhouette is a game of repitition, i would think you would shoot one way, if you will HAVE to use glasses at some matches, i would say practice that way and shoot all the matches that way. the NRA rules do not require eye or ear protection, but does default to ranges saftey rules.

of course there are a few around who pull glasses down to the tip of the nose and look over them. meets ruling.

..... would negate the benifit and only reason not to wear your perscription glasses. as a matter of fact, clear safty glasses probably fog worse than scripts, cause the are usually much bigger.

Honestly, I dont see the need for hearing protection especially at a silhouette comp when every one must shoot standard or subsonic ammo anyways. Just my two cents though. Plus, I like to hear the smack of the bullets hitting the animal!

Eye protection is a good thing. During the pistol cartridge nationals, a .22 mag (factory round) ruptured at the rim, resulting in burning powder striking the glasses and skin above/below the glasses. GLAD I HAD THE GLASSES ON.......

I didn't even think about the fact I would no longer have on eye protection if I took off the glasses as I am so use to wearing them all my life. But in fact it would be wise to wear safety glasses if not using glasses for your eyes normally and thus as mentioned totally negates the not having on glasses to avoid fogging up and sweating down the lens. The safety glasses you probably be worse in the long run.

I wonder how many people use $750+ dollar optics and $5 safety glasses so the first thing their eye sees light through is cheap ass plastic.

Oh well guess I will just search for a better anti-fog spray to use.

BH, when at Ridgeway pick up a rule book so you can read it from end to end.
Page 9 3.2 Smallbore Silhouette Rifle
...the rifle shall be chambered for only factory loaded .22 caliber short, long or long rifle cartridges. Hot loads, such as "Stingers", are not permitted.

No mention of one must shoot standard or subsonic ammo so its a local range rule to prevent targets from being damaged (not all clubs use cast iron targets by the way).

Once you damage your hearing the damage is not reversible and even reports from .22 RF can damage your hearing, you are too young for that.
Please do the smart thing and always use ear and eye protection when shooting.

I think I'll have to invest is some nice ear plugs. I refuse to wear muffs as they hinder my hold and cheek weld, but a good set of ear plugs would probably help to solve that and to block out the heckling aswell.

the real issue with the report is it happens faster than the ear can constrict and protect itself, even a subsonic report can be loud enough to damage the delicate inner ear. not so bad when you are shooting 'cause the noise is directed away from you and 20+ inches ahead of your melon. but when standing next to someone the noise is more "at" you so over time can cause some loss. the supersonic crack is not al that much louder anyways, just sharp.

you're a young fellow, but some day you will want to hear the neuances of your babys voice.

Thank you for all the carring concerns. I went to basspro today and picked up a nice pair off ear plugs $15, but well worth it. They are even the nice ones that mold to your ear!
