5R rifling

I'm getting ready to rebarrel my HPHR. I see that Krieger, Bartlein and others offer 5R rifling. Has anybody ever used one of these barrels and what was your experience compared to a conventional rifled barrel? Thannk you in advance. Mark

I have the ""Ratchet" rifling in my stainless barrel from Shilen which is basically the same thing. It cleans real easy but other than that I don't have any other data for you. I've not been able to verify the other claimed benefits of the radius rifling (less wind drift, higher velocity). It certainly doesn't hurt that's for sure. My Shilen is a solid .5 to .6 MOA barrel.

Varn, I have a Mike Rock 5R its by far the most accurate 308 I have ever shot..its shoots in the teens on a good day. I dont know about the claims either but it seems to bear out the odd grove thing. I have heared that odd number grooved rifles are more accurate...true or not who knows but mine shoots crazy good.

We are sold on the "LILJA" 3 groove, 8 twist for our 6.5's (Creedmoor, 260, Bobcat). Shoot great and clean easy!

Are these 3 groove barrels canted or radiused land barrels or are they conventional land and groove barrels?

As far as I know they are conventional.

The Krieger and Bartlein barrels are cut rifled. 5R refers to land count and direction. Both are great high power barrels and derive from Boots Obermeyer design and theory. I like the 3 groove Pac-Nor 'cause they shoot, clean up easily, are reasonably priced and are fast delivery. (Expect 8 weeks for Bartlein or longer, Ditto Krieger.) Shilen are very slick button rifled barrels...shilen copper plates the hole before button rifling and then does a superb lapping...they just don't last long. Lilja...make great button rifled barrels and so does Hart. K &P makes a great cut rifled barrel but I heard he's heavily into 50 BMG. Schneider also makes a great button rifled barrel. I have had all of them except Krieger and Bartlein ... only because of the wait. But a whole bunch of my high power & bench rest guys love them. Its pretty hard to find a bad barrel...so long as you're buying match grade. FYI we sectioned a 7 BR barrel that had over 25000 rounds through it...the throat eroded about 3 inches but the barrel still was shooting minute of angle....the last 3" (at the muzzle)were still tight and crisp..that's why!

Just ordered a Krieger for my new highpower. They are currently quoting 6 months for a barrel. The ones Pharr has been ordering for customers have been taking from 3-5 months.

Good to hear, Addicted. What chamber did you choose?

Bob - You'll be happy to hear I'm sticking with 7mm-08. It's treated me well both as a hunting round and as a silhouette round, and I have the dies, brass, etc for it.

I had a feeling you'd be pleased. :D ;)
By the way, will you be at Nationals? I don't think I've had a chance to meet you yet.

I forgot to mention we decided to go with the 5R on mine. Partially as Mark wanted to be able to actually play with one so he could let customers know what he thinks about them. He's also been told that there doesn't seem to be any hard data that they are better, but that there isn't any data that they are worse, either.

I ordered two Kreigers afer the first of the year, was told 20 weeks out, took 16 for delivery. I am a Kreiger fan, never had a bad one, but wanted a new barrel for our state match, bought a Hart off from Bill Cole that he had laying around, nothing wrong with it.

Yep, I will be there. HP only, will roll in about noon Wed. Look for the guy with the loud color COLORADO rifle silhouette Tshirt. The rest of the CO crew will be wearing their plain garden variety colors. I had a bunch of special colors done up just for me cause I'm special. 8) TIP: bring some 150 MK ammo with you in case we get those PIA southwest winds again.
