What Barrel ???

Post by 44 mag »

As my build continues I am surching for the proper twist for 123 grn and 140 grn. I am going with A 6.5 x 47. I have found 8 twist in stock is this A good choice? Also what contour is best for hunter rifle? I have my eye on A lijia #4 contour in 8 twist. good choice or is there better?

Mike,

For hunter rifle a #4 contour with an 8 twist is what you want. Lilja's are good, but I prefer Krieger's. I have been using them for 20 yrs.

built a 260 using Hart # 5 contour and light weight parts. #4 makes weight easily, # 5 might be pushing limits. Using a # 5 everything needs to be light weight. Stock under 2 lbs, Aluminun bolt shroud, Light scope mount and a light scope.

When I got mine I noticed they listed the #4 contour as 1/4 lb lighter than the #5 but it was only around .003" thinner diameter. This was for Kreiger 8 twist. I plan to use a 4200 8-32 so the extra weight of the scope will be offset by the lighter barrel weight. If you are going with a composite stock like Robertsons/Pharr you can get away with a #5 contour and make weight no problem from what I have seen.

Any reason you are going with the 123gr and 140gr bullets? I plan to use 107 and 142 gr Sierra Matchkings HPBT. I've read good things about the Lapua Scenar 123s but don't see any advantage to using them over a 107 for C,P and T.

I am using the same bbl and it is great. It shoots anything from 107s to 142 with the 8 twist and 3 groves.

I used mine at the nationals for both standard and hunter rifle the last two years and it did not copper foul either time. Just some powder fouling. Have you had this result or I'm just lucky.
