I think I would really like to get into smallbore Silhouette. I haven't been involved in any shooting sports for decades and am not a member of any club or range (I have my own range).
I think there are matches in western WA, but I live closer to Missoula than Seattle (not by accident).
Can you guys give me any direction?

I'm in central AZ for the winter now. I'd like to try both Small bore and smallbore lever action. Where should I be looking for schedules etc? I'm situated between Phoenix and Tucson.Jerry G I sent you a PM.

Your best bet is Missoula, MT. They have a beautiful rang and dhoot both Small Bore and High Power.

I see you're in Casa Grande. I'll be in your area this winter, maybe I'll just wait until I'm down there. Can you direct me to local info. there? I need to figure out what rifle(s) and sights to bring.
I envision myself shooting sporter weight rifles and would be interested in iron sights as well as scope sights. I'd like to find out what classes are available and if it's feasible to shoot more than one class per day.

You can shoot silhouette down around PHX every weekend. sometimes you have to decide which match you'll miss to attend another. I'll be back down there the first of Oct, right after thr CO state SB the last weekend in Sept. Let me know when you get in the area and I'll drag you to a match or 2. Don't get a rifle untill you go to a match. You can shoot one of my rifles.

You can shoot in 2 different classes in a day for SB. There is a hunter rifle class and a heavy rifle class (standard rifle) and the hunter can be shot in both. The score you shoot in your first match will place you in a class (master, AAA, AA, A, amd B) so you are compeating against shooters much like you and NOT the top dawg at the shoot.

Missoula shoots Jul 7 and Aug 4

I've learned a lot. I assumed that there would be classes for iron sights, apparently not, no matter. I also see that AZ seems to be the place to be for Sihoulette, so I'll plan to get started down there. Missoula does seem to be the closest events to me, and it's not that close.
I've got adequate rifles to choose from but I'll need to get a more suitable scope. I'm not sure if I should just throw something on to get started or bite the bullet and get the real deal. It seems like choices are fairly limited and a variable power scope would be pretty versatile. I find it hard to believe that I could ever shoot a light rifle offhand with a 20 power scope but the appeal is that I've got so much to learn.
I will be ready to give it a go this winter in AZ.

Moto, you use iron sights in the lever action, which is smallbore, pistol cartridge, and cowboy lever action (CLA). You can shoot the smallbore rifles with iron sights, I have done it and know several that still do it. It is no longer a separate class though, so you are up against some tough competition, although we had a shooter from SC at the FL states that placed in the A class with his irons, against the scoped rifles. Anyway Jerry is right, show up and try different stuff before buying. Bring what you have, most match directors are more than willing to let you "shoot what you brung" as long as it doesn't damage the targets (ie stingers, high velocity ammo, which some semi-autos need for functioning).

Moto Vita,

You need to do some traveling to several matches and learn all about the game then start your own match at your range!!! That way you can recruit a bunch of new locals to the game and there will be another great match for folks to shoot.

Well, AZ is where it all started north of the border - so it's only natural that the South West is blessed with more silhouette shoots than one can possibly attend.... A few of us at Pala have been discussing getting out to a few of the AZ shoots. It's always fun to visit other ranges.
