Hearing protection

I've been considering electronic hearing protection, but know very little about it. I like the idea of enhanced hearing - been a shooter a long time and need some help - and prefer the "ear plug" style. The prices are all over the place and I need some help picking the right set. Anyone have a suggestion what I should stick in my ear (for hearing protection)?

I got a pair of soundgear a few months ago. i really like them. They are made by Starky which is a huge hearing aid company.

expensive, but good.

Get yourself a pair with a slim profile. The larger profile gets in the way of my rifle stocks.

I tried them for a while and didn't care for them. If you don't want to hear the normal chit chat that goes on behind the line at most matches then stay away from the electronic muffs. To me they were very distracting. Of course I have a severe hearing loss and maybe that's why I found them so annoying. Several friends use these all the time and they love them. YMMV.

I had a set and to be honest the constant going from hearing people talk to quiet was annoying. I know I could turn them off which is what I did but why spend the money on them only to leave then turned off?

I prefer custom made ear plugs anymore.

I have a pair I use mainly when doing range duty. I use them sometimes when shooting but usually use an ear plug type protection. Like Dave said, sometime they get in the way.

I have some of the new Surefire sonic defenders http://www.surefire.com/ep7-sonic-defenders-ultra.html. They're much more comfortable to wear than the others. I work around noise all day and can wear these with no discomfort, and still hear other sounds to a point. Then when you come in the house, and the nagging and hoot an hollering starts. Just put the stoppers in. Cuts that out. These also have a strap (for lack of proper term) that connects them together. When not in use, pull them out and let them hang. Kind of like putting your glasses on top of your head, you do have to remember that's where they are. My first clue is usually when I bend over and they're dangling in front of my eyes, found them. The other ones they sell, don't work for me I have tried most all of them. I bought mine from a guy on E bay for 15.00 shipped. VA shipper is what he goes by. Help a vet at the same time. Kill two stones with one bird.
