If McManatee's flying in to Jax, make sure he packs sleeping bag for the airport.

Question about match times..

Post by Dee »

I am trying to get some plans put together to go in May and it looks like I am going to have to fly.

Can anyone tell me about what time on Sunday the Event will wrap up? Need to give myself enough time to get to the airport etc and can't really book a flight till I know.

This will me my first big match and I was wondering how it works exactly. I figure everyone shoots the first match of the day before lunch and the second afterwards. How do the relays work exactly? Do you know what relay you will be in beforehand or do you have to wait till your name is called to go to the line? I am assuming you move around shooting all 4 animals one after the other once your relay is up, would this be correct?

Any info about how the matches work and the timing is appreciated.

Dee,
I will try to answer your questions. Usually there is one match before lunch and one after lunch. Typically, relay one shoots a bank of ten rounds, then relay two shoots their first bank of ten and so on. After the third or fourth relay depending on the size of the range and number of shooters relay one will come back on the line for their second bank of ten animals... and the cycle continues with each realy shooting one bank of animals. This is what typically gets to a lot of shooters in a big match is the on/off the line and the waiting for their relay to come up again. In some peoples situations they stay on the line becuase they are spotting for others, this can also be exhausting. Thus is the reason you will see a lot of the really good spotters only spot for one ro maybe two people, the exhaustion of competing and spotting is a big factor in their own scores.

As for final time on Sunday in the past we have typically shortened lunch and are completed the firing sequence by around 4 pm, but remember that this is going to be dependent on the number of competitors and to some extent weather. Keep in mind also that checking in to the airlines with a firearm requires more time, unless you have someone driving it over for you. Feel free to ask more questions, I hope I did not confuse you more.

Thanks Innocent, I thought I heard something about waits between animals but wasn't sure if it was for all relays to finish that animal. I can see where the wait could throw you out of rthym between animals. As for flying with my rifle I am not to thrilled with the thought of having to do that. Hopefully I can find someone local going to take my kit with them so I can breeze in and out of the airport.

I see they limit it to 96 shooters and had 64 +/- a few last year attend. How many banks do they have in Fl and idea?

Really looking forward to going. Just rechecked my trigger weight since I will be shooting qualification rounds this weekend at the first local match. Now if I could just get this stock I have worked on and installed before the Trifecta starts. Well ok it might not help my score but its bound to make me look better doing it

Thanks again.

Dee, We have 6 banks of animals, so I can do 4 relays @ 96. I can go up to 120 in 5 relays. The target setters are very fast, they ussally have the range set back up between 3 to 4 mins. we aslo let you bring your equipment to the line, must have an open bolt indicator and not handle the rifle. Saturday is a little longer day due to the major door prizes we had out. The awards, shoot- offs will all be done for standard rifle which is what we shoot 1st on Saturday, so we don't have to worry about it on Sunday. On Sunday, I don't rush anyone, but we do take a shorter lunch break and run a little faster on the between the 1st and 2nd bank, ussally about 15 to 20 seconds. We have in the past been done around 4 pm, just like Mary memtioned. I hope the helps. I'm glad you are making the match. If any other qauestions e-mail me at cwdgun@bellsouth. net. This goes for anyone esle aslo if any one else needs any help or have questions. Thanks everyone and hope to see you at the Sunshine Classic.
