I received the e-mail from the silhouette division and the 308 Marlin is not legal for CLA.

Is it the shape of the brass itself or the pointed bullets that usually come in factory ammo that makes it not legal?

The reply I received just said No, must have a rimmed case.

I'll let Tony take this then, as he's much more deft with the wording of rules than I am. Suffice it to say that the 308 Marlin does have a rimmed case.

I dunno. I'm just the relay. I'm gonna hold off on the purchase until Greg changes his mind. Until then it's me and my 38-55.

That is why I suggested that you include documentation read pictures or description from maker and also a piece of brass with your question so Greg and members of the Silhouette Committee can see that the cartridge meets the rule's requirements. Greg will not give you a go ahead without being certain the cartridge is legal because once he does give you his OK he can't go back and tell you sorry I made a mistake. Glen ring, I am not knocking Greg, he does the best he is able to considering he does not get a lot of help from the NRA.
You may want to know he does not sit behind a computer and replies to your Emails. Lois or maybe Jonathan do that for him.
If you do not include documentation, pictures, brass, etc. do not expect to get a favorable reply to your question.

Glen Ring, I suggest that you try as Tony recommends if you want to use this cartridge. It certainly appears to be rimmed to me, but my experience with this type of situation is that you as the potential user need to present all the data, and examples as the committee is volunteer and for the most part will not do any research on their own.

I think 44 mag started this post and the question. I hope that we've helped answer his/her question. I have an upcoming elk hunt and wanted to use that as an excuse to by another gun. I had asked this months ago and received a no from the silhouette department, but after the posts I thought things had changed. I'll just continue using my 38-55 in cla.
I know how to present documentation , photographs, flow charts etc to win an argument. I don't want an argument, just trying to assist a fellow shooter ( 44 mag) obtain information . I hope I've helped do that. Enough Said.

Just curious, don't shoot CLA, so am pretty ignorant of things..Obviously the 308 Marlin has a rim.....But Greg says the cartridge is not legal...Does it have anything to do with how a cartridge headspaces? Typcially a rimmed cartridge headspaces on the rim, a rimless bottlenecked cartridge headspaces off of a point (datum line?) described by a line drawn through a predetermined part of the shoulder. (I know, I know, i've been spending too much time reading P.O. Ackley's stuff). Could that be why they ruled the cartridge illegal? Again, I don't have a dog in this hunt, just curious. Thanks.

Logic not allowed here, just like anything with "magnum" in the name isn't allowed in HP, even if someone were crazy enough to try a 44 Magnum pistol cartridge that probably wouldn't even make it 500m, much less damage targets.

Agree about the logic not playing any part in the equation....Does the 308 Marlin headspace off the shoulder or rim?...Out of curiosity I looked at the ballistics, and the round looks to be a real answer for a short handy rifle champering a deer, elk, black bear type round...One of my favorite all round cartridges is the old 45-70....With the proper handloads you can do anything from plinking to shooting dangerous game with it and it works well through a strong lever action..

Just go here and read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.338_Marlin_Express I have been looking hard at the 338 MX to use in CLAS and if I go camel killing with Outback Mick. A nice 235gn mold in hollow and solid should do the jobs nicely. Just need a answer from the NRA I guess!!! Otherwise I suppose it'll have to be another 45/70 shame! shame! shame!.
