I think half the shooters around the country have adoped you Mary. You show up, someone shoves a rifle in your hands and you seem to do just fine.

I went to the range today and had perfect conditions the entire day. Got there at 7am to 35degrees and it warmed up to 65 by noon. I had enough by 2pm and headed home. Hardly a breeze all day and warm for us this time of year. I brought out five 7-08's to practice with including the two long action 700's I recently cobbled together. Both of these run of the mill rifles shoot fantastic easily being able to head shoot chickens off the bench with a variety of bullet-powder combinations. Both were put together including scopes for about $575.00 each. I bought a new old style uncheckered ADL stock from Gunparts Corp for $90.00 to replace the green painted one. They will be perfect loaner and practice guns. I would use either in any match with confidence. I decided to only set up a mess of chickens and pigs to fire on today. Skipping the turkeys and rams made the several target resets and putting them away much easier being alone. All totaled I fired 215 rds. of 7-08 rotating through the five guns.

A perfect day at the range down here is enough time to get off a 5 shot group before there is a 180º wind shift.

Those are some good looking rifles and an excellent idea to put together some rifles for new people to try.

Bob you have a great range in a really nice part of the country.....Now if only I can get that rifle finished I will try to get out there to shoot a match over there....

Damn, you hoarder!!! Have you forgotton who clued you in on the take-off barrels? I gave up a long time ago on the 7-08 race when you hit 7 or 8, I just want 4 good shooters.

OK...there is one up on Gunbroker right now . A 22" skinny mountain tube. It is advertised as coming off a titanium model 700 and the clown is asking over $150. for it. The guy actually thinks it is made from titanium!! But what is worse someone has bid on it . It even has four shallow grooves lathe cut into it to jazz it up a bit. There actually were a couple of people who made barrels out of titanium. They wanted to appeal to the crowd who had something no one else had...well, the did. What they had was a barrel that did not shoot well and wore out almost instantaneously. Ti, at any price, is simply not a good barrel material.

Your right Rick. One of the McMillan brothers made a titanium .308 barrel as an experiment. In less than 12 shots 8-10 inches of the bore had been torn out, essentially became part of the bullets every shot. Recovered jackets had much barrel metal adhered or fused to them. The rest of the bore was badly galled from the passing bullets. No doubt the military has been down this road.
