I thought you were on a 7-08 buying freeze, I'm not selling my action, I would like to put together a light varmint 7-08, one with a custom barrel, fast twist 26" barrel for shooting with the guys down at Ben Lomond. They have a match where they shoot 600 yards off the bench and as you know it's windy down there, I'd like to try some of the heavy 7mm's, like 180's.

180's for 600 yds? What about the 168 Berger? Although, Berger now has the Hybrid out for 7mm (180gr) that is supposed to be great in the wind.

It happens...

Finally broke down and ordered a Remington 700 CDL in 7mm-08 today...they say it should be here within a week of when the shop places the order...they don't know if the supplier is open on President's Day or not....so the order could be placed on Tuesday, 21st of FEB...no big deal, but it should be a LOT faster than the order the same shop tried to place with Kimber for an 84M in 7mm-08. Were told that it would be 6 MONTHS!!! SIX....6...SIX MONTHS !! Told Kimber to forget it. Anyway, it seems that the odds of getting a Remington that shoots well are better than a Kimber from what I am hearing about Kimber lately. Not to mention that I have NEVER, NEVER heard anything good about Kimber's customer service. The price for the Remington is right about 200 bucks less than the Kimber, anyway...Maybe that means I can afford a new scope to mount on it instead of usiing one of the Leupolds I already have.....Or maybe robbing a ( I think) Tasco varmint scope off of another gun.

Will let you all know how it winds up shooting. Got my fingers crossed!!

Do the CDL's have a skinny 22" barrel?

Nope..the CDL barrels are 24 inches. The barrels are a little heavier than, say, the Kimber 84M which has a 22 inch barrel. The Kimber site says the 84M is 5 pounds, 13 ounces and the Remington goes 7.375 (7 pounds 6 ounces) so part of that about has to be in the barrel. If you do the math, the Remington CDL is about 1 1/2 pounds heavier between the two. How much does two inches of barrel weigh? I don't know. I'm sure part of the extra weight is in the cheekpiece, which the Kimber does not have....I think the Remington 700 CDL's barrel is not as slim and flexible as the Kimber's is. That should give somewhat better accuarcy due to less harmonics and other sorts of bad vibes, but the proof will only be when I finally go shoot it.

Sometime in the next week I"ll look up a few of my favorite loads and share them with you all, I've had exceptionally good luck with the Limbsaver barrel deresonator, you might try one, they eliminate that tendency of some loads to group in two different spots. It would seem like it's a gimmick but hunting rifle contour barrels really shoot well with them if everything else is in order.
