By the way, I grew up in Lafayette, LA. Sounds like there's a lot of shooting going on down in LA.

I grew up in Lafayette as well. Born in New Orleans and live outside Baton Rouge now. We have a nice little assortment of silhouette to shoot in this area. It was just SB but in the past 4 years we have added 3 air rifle classes and also some Cowboy. Just sent an email reply discussing the building of a full High Power Range that will also accommodate Cowboy using the big bores.

We already have an airgun match and two SB matches at different ranges each month to shoot. But I can't wait for the HP range to get set up. We will likely only shoot that every other month since we can shoot all year down here.

Oh and those are so pretty stout winds you have there You know what the weather is like here in summer time, imagine the mirage we get shooting high power

Don't take for granted your easy access to shooting. It's totally different out here. If I want to shoot SB on the weekend I have to get to the range 3 hours early (6AM) to get a spot. During the week I have to show up at 10AM to get a bench for the 12 opening. Last week Wed I showed up at 10:30 and all the benches were taken. Kind of sucks since the drive to the range is 45min. How's that for dedication?

How far away from Lafayette are the ranges / matches? The next time I go visit I might have to try to attend something. Maybe I'll plan a trip around it.

We had one match here in SD many years ago that the wind blew harder than our normal gale, by the end of the shoot gongs had to be used,
the targets would not stay up long enough to shoot them down!
I am glad I was not in the shoot offs that day the gongs where moving targets to boot!

Going through a locker of sorts at my gun club, I came across some silhouette targets. Some are 3/8th scale, some are 1/5th scale.
I shoot both smallbore rifle and smallbore pistol silhouette, and (as you know) they use different size targets - coincidentally, 3/8th and 1/5th.
My problem lies in the fact that I don't have a complete set of either.
Is there a formula whereby I can figure out where to set the wrong size targets to achieve the same apparent size when (maybe that should be "IF") I get them lined up in the crosshairs?
I should probably be able to figure it out, but it has been more years than I care to mention since I had to do any of that kind of figuring.

Can anyone help me out?

On another board, someone suggested just using paper targets printed at the right size for what I am shooting.
Great idea, and I may use it, but there is something about hearing that "ping" and seeing that "stoopid chikun" fall that you just don't get with paper targets. If I wanted to shoot at paper, I'd do bullseye stuff.

If you want to use 3/8 scale targets you just need to set them at 3/8 the distance of full-scale targets. So:

Chickens = (3/8)200m = 75m
Pigs = (3/8)300m = 112.5m
Turkeys = (3/8)385m = 144m
Rams = (3/8)500m = 187.5m

Hope you have a lot of space at your range and a lot of elevation adjustment in your scope!!!

We shoot a 200 yard club match on swingers, only equipment rule is lead bullet. Well painted target spotted with two scopes per target. .22 strikes are fairly easy to see if the target is not too shot up

My .22 Standard Velocity elevation at 200 yards is 18 MOA higher than 100 meters. In pratice if the wind is not blowing .22 rimfire does fine at 200 yards. Get any wind at all you are sunk.

That should have dawned on me - duh.
Of course, I wasn't sure what the distances were for full size targets, so I was hooped from the get-go, I guess!

We do have the room at the range, although I am not sure I want to be walking THAT far to reset rams.
I may end up either printing off a bunch of appropriately scaled targets or buying some of the splatter targets until I can get the metals in.
A thought just occurred to me - maybe I could go with hanging / spinners and never have to reset. That would mean more rounds down range and a whole lot less walking.
And I would get the satisfying "ping" once in every hundred shots or so.
Did I mention I am new to this?

You can spot very well on steel swingers using a spotting board, Here is one from our club match, shot when HP Silhouette is finished using single shots and lever actions. 500 M Ram hung at 200 yards, same as CLA. Get 3 good shooters on a target 10 shots eacy it can have 25 or more strikes and still identify who shot what. Each shooter has his own color.





We shoot 3 guns off relay 2 with scopes one with the score cards, then switch off.. It's not regulation but a lot of fun

Wow, what a difference practice can make. When I first tried the 10 meter target I thought I'd never get good enough to hit it.

Now I can nail it more than I miss. Amazing. I'm pumped up and getting hooked on that feeling of satisfaction that comes with a hit.

I shot this with an Anschutz LG380 I purchased about a week ago. It took a while to get used to the heft but now I dig it. I do wish I could get some good instruction from someone locally on the proper technique since I'm pretty much winging.

On the target below I changed from round nose to wad cutters half way through. The wad cutters were not as clean on this paper.

Question: Would pig #C2 and D2 be considered hits?

everything is a miss till the target falls off the stand ;)

I have had misses score by hitting the stand just right,
and have had hits not score, but only twice .......... so far,

When I shoot that target inside at night I only count the hits that have at least 1/2 the pellet cutting the animal. You have to remember the targets are scaled way down and your pellet is not. Scale your pellet down to match and it would be about the size of a heavy sewing needle in diameter. I've found when using this scoring technique my practice scores fall in line with my match scores. For the little thin leg hits etc if it looks centered or close enough give yourself the point as a ego booster
