Cool. Thanks for responding. I have a call into the silhouette desk at the NRA to have them confirm or deny the use of the 1416 HB for the sporting class. We will see. I'll let everyone know the outcome if they call back.

So I called the NRA this morning and spoke to Barry. Although they see the rules as fairly cut and dry they could not give me a definitive yes or no on the heavy barrel version. They did tell me that they have a jig that measures all the rifles and weighs them before the nationals and are going to send me a copy of the rule book form last year which contains the survey results from the 2012 nationals about equipment used for each class. This should give me a good list of what rifles are being used as well as optics and possibly end weights. When I get the list I will try to consolidate it and post it. I really was hoping for a definitive answer but I guess the list is a good starting point. This never would have been an issue if the dealer would have just had the D KL model in stock. Arghhhhhhhhh.

I have been match director for over 20 years, and also Texas State Championship director several times, and personally certified all rifles at several different matches. I can assure you that the 1416HB is legal as long as is not over 8 1/2 lbs. and the trigger has a functioning safety, and will pick up a certified 2 lbs. weight.

I guess I will chime in also, like Evelio I have been shooting silhouette for over 30 years. I have run 3 state, 3 regional, and 16 years of club matches for both smallbore and airgun during that time. During this year I have done gun certification at two different matches and like Evelio can tell you the gun in question is legal as Evelio said if it meets the weight limit and trigger regulations.

I really want to get this done as I believe I am looking at a good price for the rifle and my guy tells me that it is on sale right now. I like the look of the 17 series better but the cost and the weight of the rifle are getting me there. I could do it but the. I would have to save for another 5 months to put an optic on it. The list is comming snail mail so it could be a week before it even gets here.

Do you all have any advice on an optic for me? I have about 700 to spend on the scope and mounts.

Leupold 6.5x20 EFR from Chicken George on this site with the large dot installed. Scope is a little over $700 and a set of BKL rings about $23 and your in business for many years.

Get the rifle if you want it. Both Evelio and Paul say it's legal and they know way more than any of the goobers at the silhouette dept at the NRA (trust me, I have to deal with them all the time). That list isnt going to do you much good.

As for scopes, I wrote a dissertation on scopes not long ago and sever other folks had opinions. You should read the thread here: http://www.steelchickens.com/forums/vie ... 0&start=15

Keep in mind that your rifle might be a bit on the heavy side with that heavy barrel so you might want to stick to a lighter scope.

Ok. On yor advice I ordered the HB. I know I will be happy with it for a long time. Thanks for the help everyone. Next is on to the optic. Thanks to everyone again. I'll post a pic when I have her complete and I hav a name picked out.

It would be legal at our club. Like most match directors I rarely check and when I do it's only overall weight and trigger pull. Fact that you see that rifle on the line often is good enough. Also agree on asking NRA, they publish a rule book don't make rulings.

I just noticed a new Leupold 6.5-20 in the Marketplace that would be hard to beat...

Ok I picked her up the other day. Really nice rifle. Just wanted to check with you all on one thing. The bolt does seem like it is binding up a bit when putting any pressure on it while closing. Is this a normal thing that will work in or should I have someone look at this?


Also. Can you give me some other suggestions on a scope. As I look at my cash situation I don't know that I will be able to afford the leupold.

Besides Leupold, the more common brands are Sightron and Weaver. Are you looking for a fixed or variable power scope?

New guy here so excuse my question, but from reading the above responses, that would also make the Savage 900TR a hunter class as well? As long as it meets the other criteria too of course. I am placed in standard, but technically since the barrel is thinner at the muzzle than receiver I should ask to be put into the Hunter class? From looking at pictures of that rifle and reading it's description (as a 'Target Rifle') I believe it would be correctly classified as a Standard rifle.
