How did the "light rifle" rules differ from todays "hunter rifle"? From what I understand about the "chin guns" I can see where that was crap to start a class then dump it a year or so later.

I know! I cant believe that you guys put up with that! Considering the points that I made before and that the NRA does nothing to promote our game and how easy it would be to do electronically what the NRA does for silhouette, I would have thought the uproar from the change in rules would have forced the NRA out of the silhouette business.

cedestech wrote:Honestly I'm not that worried about it. I was reading the rules and realized there was a huge hole in them that leaves a lot to individual interpretation. What is OK to one person or jury is a abomination to another. I just can't believe I am the first to point it out. I'll probably use the flat top Wooster I have but it would be nice to just buy a stock and drop a action into it.

No worries.

:)
You are definitely not the first to point it out. That is why this hunting style stock needs clarified once and for all. My concern of this is someone spending hard-earned money then not being able to use it. Myself and 5 others I know spent $1400 EACH on Walther Hunter PCP rifles that were legal in Air rifle Sporter class for one year and then were outlawed. I'd hate to see that happen to anyone else due to a rule not being clarified. Al's advice is very wise. Get a clarification from Greg if you want to proceed with the 54:18 style stock. Personally I'd go with the Wooster you have and not have any concerns. Mark Varner

Oh yeah... looks like a 'hunter' to me...don't forget to add in the gyroscopic muzzle stabilizer and the infrared target centering device....if you can get the automated wind correctional assembly as an option on those models I'd like one too !!

Dustin,
There was a lot of talk about pulling out of the NRA and form a new organization like Gates did with the pistol crowd. I think the downfall was there wasn't anyone that stepped forward to do it. I still wish we had done that.

Ced,
My memory is not 100%. I think the 'light rifle' had to fit in the 'heavy rifle' (standard rifle) jig. Any safe trigger and rifle with scope not to exceed 8 lbs. Then they changed it to 'hunter rifle' and it had to be 'factory stock'. Many carried a catalog page to show that the rifle they were using was available to the general public at one time or another. That is the same time the 2 lb trigger came into effect. Later they upped the weight of the hunter rifle and also changed the rule to the 'look like' we have today. I do not remember the dates for any of these changes.

Thanks. I have seen "light rifle" mentioned several times over the last few years and have no frame of reference.

So, why don't we just keep the hunter rifle rules the way they are but with a little clarification and then make the standard class an "open" class with only a weight limit or a few general rules. Then we can all shoot our current hunter or frankenhunters in the hunter class. And we can buy some new expensive rifle for open class.

I checked with another lot timer about Light Rifle. Nine pound gun, any stock, two pound trigger. That's why Anschutz came out with the 64 MS. Then a few years later the NRA changed it to Hunter Rifle. Originally for SBHR the weight was only 7 1/2 pounds. Al Foust

Ghost, Standard class is an open class. You can do most anything you want as long as you conform to the weight and dimension rules. One thing that has thrown a wrench into this is none of the manufactures make an off the shelf heavy barreled gun that will make weight. Back in the day most shooters bought a 700 Varmint Special in 308, 708, 243, or 6mm scoped it and went shooting. They all had 24 in barrels. A lot of shooters would rebarrel to 26 in and go to fiberglass. One thing I have found interesting is the McMillan Silhouette from back then is very similar to the high tech stocks of today. However they were a lot heavier.

That's where the we need another class for experimenting makes no sense to me. We have experimented our hunter rifles right into what standard was 30 years ago minus a pound of weight and with a heavier trigger. Hell I took my std rifle 26 in number 5 barreled action out of my Anschutz McMillan stock ( 10 lbs ) and dropped it a Nesika Bay stock and it made weight for hunter rifle. It's a little front heavy, but I shot my way into Master class with it in no time. I shot a lot of HP back then, I don't now and my scores reflect it.

This game is one of the most difficult rifle sports available, and you have to have a rig that is comfortable to YOU. I have had a lot of different stocks over the years some I liked a lot some not so much. The current crop of high tech light weight stocks are all good and there is enough difference in them to allow a shooter to pick the one that fits him best. Like I said before I have 3 Nesiksa's that are pretty much all the same. I rotate them by round count the highest count becomes a practice gun the other 2 I shoot in matches. Most of the time I shoot the same rifle in both matches, and I have the other there as a spare. I have absolutely NO problem shooting my hunter rifle in std class.

Hey, everyone have a great season, and hopefully we'll meet up at Raton. Look me up, I'll be the old guy under the Sierra hat.

I'd like to shoot my Savage FV with ESA stock in Standard. Feels great offhand with the Prostaff 3-9x40 EFR on it.

I've been banging away at the turkey practice swinger lately. :)
