alternative powders, 260 Rem.....

I'm a mediocre (and old) high power shooter, and I'm shooting 107 and 142 Sierras out of a factory barreled Rem 700 with Varget and RL22..... I can see my powder stash burning up before my eyes, and I see that Varget and RL22 are seemingly becoming rare.... the loads were given to me by a master and have worked fairly well. What other powders are suitable? I know about 4350 and H4831c, but they're getting rare, too. Winchester 748 is available and listed just under Varget on the powder burning rate chart. Can it work?

I've seen varget on the shelves here in Missoula at 2 different shops recently. One had a 7 pounder too. Can't help you with other powders since I'm just using varget right now, but PM me if you might get up this way for iron man or anything, I'd buy some extra for you.

I would expect powders the have been recently introduced to have better support from the manufacturer and therefore better supplies/more available. With that in mind I am looking at the IMR Enduron series of powders, specifically 4166 as a Varget replacement.

There doesn't seem to be a shortage anymore in NY or PA of Varget or 4831SC, I'm currently using 4831SC for my 260 loads and 6.5x55 loads and Varget in my 30-30 CLA loads

You might take a look at Benchmark. It seems to be readily available.

I used H 114 when I shot. Loaded on Dillon press and metered well, and shot very good. Hope this helps.

Here's a link to the Lapua reloading site for the 260 rem. I've had very good luck recently with N550 and 140gr bullets in my little bobcat.

The nice thing about the VV stuff is they're really committed to making sure it's available these days. Stuff meters and burns pretty clean too (if a little bit more dear price wise).

Glad to hear about the better availability of VV. I liked 550 and 560 in a 6.5 - 08 AI with Sierra 142s.

I've been using Re15 with good results as well as IMR 4064. Any medium burn powder seems to work well.

4895 get my vote. seems to find it over most. old school rifle powder that works well.
