I was shooting my 10/22 today and noticed I had a problem.

10/22 - Butler Creek Barrel - Sightron scope
Weaver TO-9 scope base - Millet Angle-Lock rings.

For some reason, the Millet rings slid about 1/2" forward on the TO-9 base.
Chances are the thing got bumped real good. I know it was tightened well. I used a torque wrench to get 30 in-lb.

I can see the scrape marks in the metal from the clamps on the rings.

I disassembled and reinstalled everything, just this evening. But, in the process, I noticed that the lugs on the bottom of the rings just don't seem to engage the grooves in the base well enough to prevent this from happening again.

If I don't want to be reinstalling my scope every time it gets the slightest bump, I'm probably going to have to get a new set of rings and a base.
(This probably isn't doing the scope any good, either. Eh?)

I liked the Millet rings because it's easy to make gross windage adjustments, simply by tightening/loosening the screws. But if they don't engage the base well enough to keep this from happening I'm going to gets something else.

And, no. I don't know how the thing got bumped. It must have been some time when I was putting it back in the rack or something. I like to think I'd remember something like that.
Maybe it happened while the gun was in the trunk of my car. Maybe I hit a bump or something. I don't know. ontknow:

I don't care for Millet for the same reasons... A few of us started using S&K scope mounts http://www.scopemounts.com/ for the stubborn ones, but I believe you need to drill and tap for them. Give them a call to be sure, they are great to work with. For the others I either use BKL's http://www.bkltech.com/ , light and hold real well in the grooves, or Leupold's http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shoo ... ingmounts/ and/or Leupolds with Weaver bases http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shoo ... ase-rings/.

I like the looks of the BKL mounts.

They look nice and solid, machined from one piece of metal. No chance of lateral or vertical movement. Eh?

I can't tell from the pictures. Do they have lugs or bolts that go through the cross slots or do they simply depend on a massive amount of gripping surface area? With that much area to grip on with, lugs shouldn't be necessary. Right?

The reason I picked the Millet rings in the first place was because they are capable of lateral adjustment. If I'm careful to put them on correctly, I can do the gross windage adjustments right on the bench when I do the rough sighting. I probably only have to adjust windage in the scope by a few clicks.

I assume that, because of their construction, there should be no need for gross lateral adjustment in the BKL base because, if installed with due care, there should be no chance of misalignment.

Which one is the one to get? The cantilever mount or the 6-screw?

What is the bullet drop compensation option about?

They are great mounts and well made. However, like I said you'll have to verif with them, because I believe at this time they only have them for the dovetails and not the cross slot weaver. The ones for cross slots that are rugged are the Leupolds or Burris Signature ones.

I have two Briley 10-22 silhouette rifle and use Burris Posi Align rings on both. The rings have a bolt that goes all the way from one side to the other. This engages the slot in the base full width. I had to use the offset shims on one to correct for windage and for elevation on both. The Burris rings have just about infinite adjustment and work well as long as you gun can spare the weight of steel rings.

Killer stock on your rifle. It looks like a Bell&Carlson Anschutz thumbhole, how did you paint it and where did you get the barrel extension and weights? Oh buy the way Ive got a Weaver T09 mount and I use BKL rings no problem, you have to slide them on from the front or back. The ones you want are part #257, but see if you can get them from brownells or some place else, BKL is really slow. I've had no problems with anything moving. They also keep the weight down if your trying to make weight with you rifle.

I went to the store and looked at some rings. (Leupold, Weaver and a couple others.) From what I can tell, rings are rings. Some have lugs, some have cross-bolts that engage the slots in the mounting base but they all have the same basic design. They are rings of steel or aluminum or some other metal which clamp on to the rail or base.

It looks like, to me, no matter what kind of rings you get, they all have the same problems too. They can come loose. They can get misaligned. And, if you don't line them up carefully, in the first place when you install them, they'll spite you every chance they can.

From what I can tell, a one piece mount is the way to go. They are strong and resistant to accidents. And, if you are careful when you install them, there's no chance for misalignment.

The S & Ks are looking mighty nice.

But those BKLs, machined from one solid block of metal, don't look like there's anything that could be steadier.

I haven't got a problem with taking the TO-9 base off the gun and replacing it with something else.

Weight: I'm not super concerned with. The gun, as it stands right now, weighs 8-1/2 lbs. with a full clip. An M-1 weighs over 9 lbs. I've got no problem shooting one of those. On the other hand, I think a heavier scope mount would put me right at the weight limit. So, I can add a little bit more weight but not TOO much more.

BKL is at the top of my list, so far. But those Weigand mounts are a close second.

The stock is a Bell & Calson Anschutz Thumbhole and the paint work was do by a guy that goes by Tuck on Rimfire Central. He called this one black ice and I don't think you could find a better person to paint a stock. The bloop tube came with the barreled action when I had Briley in Houston build this one. It has an 18" barrel on a MOA stainless action, need to start taking with me to the range along with the hunter version I have to use when it is windy.

As to the 10/22 scope issue, I shoot precision (sniper) rifles other than my silhouette addiction, so my 10/22 has a TPS (Tactical Precision) RAM Picatinney 10/22 base and Leupold MK4 rings. Hasn't slid yet (and prolly never will!):
