hi folks,
have a chance to pick up a marlin in 30-30, only has a 18.5"
barrel, is there that much differance than a 20"? longer sighting plane, vs shorter barrel time? thanks....dan
ps- shooting 50-100-150-200 meters

One thing to consider is the barrel itself, the shorter smaller diameter carbine barrel will heat up faster and not be as consistent as the longer octagon barrel (Winchester). For the Marlin I'd go with the 336 XLR in 24"..

Not a ton of difference in the 18.5" and 20" barrels if they're the same diameter. Neither will hold as steady or give as much sight radius as a good 24" barrel, though. Those long, heavy 24" octogon barrels sure are nice. Wish I had one. My little 336 with the 20" barrel lets me play the game, but doesn't exactly help me hold steady.

I'm using a 18.5 inch 357 Marlin for PC and switched mid-year to a tang sight mounted on the rear stock clamp member from a receiver sight. The extra 4 inches I gained in sight radius made a huge improvement in my accuracy.
No doubt in my mind that 'longer is better'.

What sight did you put on your marlin and how did you mount it.

Glenn, PPKNY's rear sight doesn't have a windage adjustment on it, spend the little extra and get the one with windage and save yourself a lot of time and head aches.... I like the Marbles sights.

Thanks Bob. I will put a fully adjustable Marbles sight on my 38-55.

bob259 or are you also ppkny..... At least give me a chance to answer. Yes I'm using the non-adjustable windage type tang sight but with a little engineering and a savings of roughly $100 the solid type elevation adjustable tang does the job just as well.
