Hi, are these allowed? I was thinking of trying my m-14 clone.

There used to be a class for military rifles but I think it's gone. It would be difficult to shoot a good score with an M14 due to the trigger and the stock is set up for apeture sights. There hard to shoot offhand with a scope without being able to rest your cheek on the stock. Some of the worst factory triggers on 700 remingtons I've felt would qualify as acceptable on an M14.
Now if Rock River made a Coyote in 7-08.........

The M14 was optimized for a different game.

It would work if you want to use it. I have seen a couple shooters use them in the past and shoot in the mid 20's. but understand they were very good to start with and were not using the clones. No armor P ammo would be allowed because of target damage. You also want to be sure you are not dumping your brass on your neighbor as that can be a bit distracting for him.

The M1-A is legal for standard class, but you can't used the Mag. for hand support.
When the local clubs had a 3 BANDIDOS MATCH my team used M1-As and we were unbeatable, had a lot of fun, and won good money. If you try it, I would replace the front post with an aperture sight, then all you have to do is put the animal in the center of both circles and squeze that trigger. It will definetly take the rams down with the 172 grainers.

I shot my M1A a few times when I lived in the Phoenix area. I even had a standard magazine cut short enough to hold 5 rounds and not serve as a means for support. Not having an apertute sight, as Evelio mentioned, I would align the top of the front sight's post with the rail (which the Ben Avery range uses to place the targets). and fire away. I think the highest score I ever got was a 12/40, using 168 gr. match bullets.

There is a catagory in the NRA clasification book for Semi-automatic Military rifle. It only allows M-1 Garands and M1A's. They are allowed only the military sights (so there goes the front appature for the better sight picture) I've shot the Garand at Dulzura at their rifle silhouette match reduced course with a score 16/40 with LC match (1961 lot) back when Garands were grouped with the heavy rifles. Thanx for the interesting replies. I've assembled a 7-08 bolt gun and can't for the life of me hold it steady enough to hit 1 in 5 at any silhouette yardage. I'm not giving up on it yet but i just picked up an M-14 clone and I seem to be able to hold it steadier. Nice to know I can actually try out with it.

In 2008 and 2009, Ridgeway Rifle Club, Ridgeway, PA held Semi-Automatic Military Silhouette Matches in April, May and June at the high power distances.

A good chance to find out how good, or, how bad your eyes are and a great chance to see that ram fall with iron sights.

Savagefan, I do believe that the garand and m1a's weigh close to 9 lbs in combat dress. That probably explains why it's easier to hold steadier than the bolt gun that probably comes in at 7 lbs. I put my 7-08 rem 700 bdl into one of richards microfit thumbhole silhouette stocks and found it a little easier to hold (2 legs into AA) and can't seem to hit over 16 with the stock win 670 in 308 for hunter (top of A class) Good luck at you next match, Steve Tapp

thanx Steve, geez now it's time to set up for hunting season, so little time.

I may give her a go this season, at practice it seems to knock them down quite well, if I'm not too jittery.

PA clubs Ridgway http://ridgwayrifleclub.com/ and CSLC http://www.consolidatedsportsmen.org/ are both having Military Rifle Silhouette shoots this year 2010.
Ridgway's date are April 11, May 2 , & June 6 which will be a NRA Registered PA State Championship.
CSLC is shooting the Military matches in conjunction with their monthly Highpower Silhouette matches. The remaining dates for 2010 are: March 27, April 24, May 22, June 26, July 24, Aug 28 & Sept 25.
CSLC is requiring a empty casing catcher or deflector.

How does a case catcher work on a M1 Garand or M1A? won't the op rod bar cause problems?

I guess the wife wouldn't count as a brass catcher huh?
