I've never shot Highpower Silhouette.If I were going to buy a stock rifle to put under my Leupold 6x18 scope, what Brand, model, and Cal. Should I consider.

A Remington short action in 260 or 708 is a good place to start....

Others will have other opinions, probably better, but my 2¢ is any Remington 700 action chambered in Remington 260. I would also look for an X-Mark trigger and stainless steel.

Ditto on the 260 or 7-08. Add a Jewell or Jackson trigger and you're good to go

Yes on the 7-08, but if you're going to change the trigger at least look at the Timney. Much less expensive, very reliable and it's a great single stage trigger. If you like two stage triggers then definitely look at the Jacksons.

Your foundation is the Remington 700 short action and everything else is negotiable. Yes, there are other excellent actions available but the 700 is the 10/22 of the high power world. There's a world of after market parts available and gunsmiths are accustomed to working on them.

As far as I know Remington is no longer making a 700 in 260. Last year they made the 700 CDL LTD in 260 (I bought one). Not a bad choice tho maybe expensive. Being a sporter weight barrel and fluted the rifle is on the light side, 7lbs. You might try a SPS in 7-08.

What's the difference in the action between a Model 7 and a 700? Or is it the same action?

The model 7 is shorter than a 700 short action. If that interests you, check out the model 7 Predator with a 22 inch barrel. I prefer the 24 inch of the 700 SPS

I already have a nice high power that's under used, but I've always wondered if the Model 7 was the same action with a lighter barrel and stock or if the action was different, too.

I've known people to search out model 600s (the forerunner to the 7) for silhouette rifles. Less weight in the receiver means more for the barrel I guess.

Soooo, not to hijack here or anything, but, if I have a model seven in .308, could I have it re-barreled into .260 once I decide to get into high power? I guess I could always start out shooting it as it is in .308, but it just has such a short pencil thin barrel...and I hate the synthetic stock that I have it in right now...

It's great for deer though.

The light weight of a M7 would make recoil harsh and the thin barrel might change impact as it gets hot. You might want to rebarrel with a 700 barrel in 7-08 or for a short course 243. Factory 700 barrels in 260 will be hard to find, they didnt make many.

The 260 is a necked down 308 so, wouldn't it work if you rebarreled to a 6.5 barrel?

Yes, a short action 308 bolt face is the prescription. You could also do a 6.5x47.
