Howdy from central PA.

I was at a local flea market/farm auction wednesday morning (Belleville, PA) when I saw someone selling steel targets, with a sheet of paper there explaining the use of the targets and recommending steelchickens.com.

I've been shooting since I was old enough to hold a gun. Pistols, rifles, shotguns, you name it. I've got a wide variety in my collection, but I got bit hard by the smallbore bug about a year ago after reading about Rimfire Tactical Precision Matches over on 6mmBR.com. Bought a Savage MKII with the heavy barrel and built it up with a Richard's Microfit stock, EGW 20moa base, and a Tasco Target/Varmint 6-24x.

So, who was at Belleville? I didn't think anyone else in my area was into this kind of stuff.

Thanks for the memories VarmintExpress. I clicked on the link that you posted, and although I didn't read much of it (yet. I'll be reading it after posting this) I did scroll through it. And it happens to be, that map at the bottom of the page is where I grew up as a child. I miss those days sometimes. I wish I was there now.

Anyway, welcome to SC. I'm also fairly new to the world of Rimfire.

So are you going to start shooting Smallbore Rifle Silhouette?

I'd like to, but I'm not sure if there is anywhere near me that holds matches.

There is also a lot of information on match formats and techniques which might be helpful.

Thats a nice site you have there. I actually used the templates you have in the targets section to cut and weld a couple sets out of 1/4" scrap steel at work. Its actually what got me really interested in silhouette shooting.

Going by your info, I'm in for a 100 mile drive to get somewhere to compete in something somewhat organized.

I'd like to organize somthing locally. I can think of five sportsman's clubs with ranges right off of the top of my head. I'll have to call around and see what I can find out.

I feel your pain.
The closest range for me that hosts matches is 112 miles (one-way). I drive 180 + miles (again...one-way) for most of my shooting competition. (Chattanooga).
I'm still waiting on the local range (20 miles) to respond to my inquiry about competitons, and the possibility of beginning them.
Even if you don't find something local, find one and get there a few times. You'll enjoy it.

the cox website is probably one of the best sites out there, but there are many clubs / ranges that hold silhouette competitions that aren't listed, including Factoryville sportsman's club (feel free to add it).

it would be nice if the NRA actually posted ALL sanctioned / approved matches somewhere, as of yet i haven't been able to find one, which is the NRA's bad (or mine for not being able to find it if it exists). one would think, "hey, they get the paperwork, they like to promote their shooting sports, they should have a listing somewhere?"

in addition to doing searches online, perhaps talk to any local shooting / sportsman's clubs to see if they have any silhouette matches going on.

organizing a match(s) really isn't as hard as one would imagine, i took over the matches at my club for the first time this year. contact the NRA http://www.nrahq.org/compete/directory.asp
as long as you have the targets and a range that'll let you shoot it you should be good to go by filling out some paperwork, and some reporting when the match is shot.

If you live near Belleville PA there are numerous matches around. If I remember correctly, Belleville is between Harrisburg and Williamsport. There is a very good club in Harrisburg and a couple of clubs around Williamsport. I think the state smallbore championship is at Lycoming County Sportsmen's in September. It is just east of Williamsport and shoots at least once a month. Also, it is around two hours to Ridgway, which is another really good club.

I will gladly add the Factoryville website and any other I have not listed. If anyone knows of any club shooting Smallbore or High Power Rifle Silhouette not listed on my website please EMAIL ME with the information. I have tried to make it a point to have every range in the USA listed if at all possible. It has been hours and hours going through hoops trying to verify all of the ranges and clubs I have listed. Some are out-and-out lame on stating what events are held with their club and/or where the range is located.

Since I was born opinionated, I have one haha! The Factoryville Sportsman's Club is an example of one that is not terrible but, could be done better. - Nowhere in the site does it clearly state Smallbore Rifle Silhouette is an event that is held there. When you go to the "Rifle" page, it does state there is a page for ARA Benchrest but still nothing about Rifle Silhouette. It is not until you download a PDF File of the schedule do you see anything about it. So to map it out it is:

Step 1 "find the home page"
Step 2 "Click on the activities page"
Step 3 "Click on the Rifles Web Page"
Step 4 "Download Rifle Schedule" and
Step 5 "Read page 2 to find Smallbore Rifle Silhouette"

If it were my club and, I wanted new members, I would have a list of all of the activities clearly stated on the "Activities" page which can have links to the details.

I'm west-northwest of harrisburg, and southeast of williamsport. Harrisburg is about an hour away. Williamsburg is a bit farther.
