Thought I would share a good alternative to a 1712. Built this rifle off a 77/22 action. Built to hunter rifle specs. The stock was custom made by me with a led weight bias toward the front for off hand shooting. It will shoot 1" or better groups at 100m (in no wind) and is a great feeling rifle. I recut the sear angles and got a crisp 2lb trigger break. Overall I am very impressed with its performance.

Cool looking rifle...how does it group at 100 meters with various ammos? Seen many 77/22's modified so many ways, still not group with anything but Tenex.

Fantastic job on the stock! Great looking rifle. I think the 77/22 is a nice feeling rifle, and made very well. As evidenced by looking through the 77/22 forum on RFC it is clear that a lot of them can shoot well too. I think it is a solid choice for this game. I also think if they were priced a little more realistically there would be a lot more of them seen in matches.

Barrel manufacturer?

As far as its groups at 100m it will hold under 1" in a no wind condition with Wolf ammo. After a few practice sessions I was able to stay in the low 30's with it. A best of 36. I tried the Aguila ammo with much the same results with an occasional slight flyer.

The barrel is a Green Mountain slightly oversized with a match chamber. Its a press fit in the reciever. I wanted it a bit oversized so it would maintain a solid fit, I would have to use a barrel vice to get it out.

Accuracy seems to be the same as both my Kimbers and Anschutz rifles.

My first match with this rifle will be this weekend so I guess we will see if it works out.

Was the over size shank a special order? A repeatable formula for an accurate 77/22 might be attractive if donor actions were less expensive.

Very nice looking rifle. I've often wondered why I never see the 77/22 on the range more. I like mine a lot since I also shoot the 77MkII for HP and the feel is the same just more kick. Good work and keep posting your results. I've heard of people threading the receiver but have never seen it done. How much over size did you have to go on the barrel?

A 10/22 has a slow lock time and requires a good follow-thru. Come to think of it, that may be my solution to my bad follow-thru. Maybe I should get the lizzard gun out again and practice with it.

The barrel shank need only be a few thousands larger than normal. I believe Green Mountain has Oversize barrels in stock. I heat the action up just enough to expand it then insert the barrel with locktite. I have to tap the rear of the reciever with a rubber mallet to get the barrel all the way in. Once it cools I know that barrel is tight and wont move at all. With the barrel mounted solid in the reciever I dont believe threading is necessary to achieve max accuracy. Kimber barrels are pressed in also I believe and they are very accurate.
I believe if set up correctly and fit to the shooter that a Ruger 77/22 can be competative even in the master class. If it can hold a 1" group or better at 100m and its trigger breaks at a crisp 2lbs then the rest is up to the shooter. That being said I still love Anschutz rifles too.

From the top of thr receiver to the bottom of the scope tube is 1.4" Thats from the receiver not the top of the nubs where the rings sit. From there it is 1.2"
I was not sure where they measure from on this receiver so I figured better safe than sorry.

All a new 1712 needs to shoot is cleaned, and what's the fun in that?

We need some more info on that stock. How was that made?

The stock started as a regular no comb sporter defect from Richards. I cant remember but I think it was like $60 bucks or something like that. I then added fiberglass to the comb and pistol grip area. I built the comb up in seperate layers because it was alot to add. After the glass was cured I rough shaped it then added bondo to get a smoother finish. I hollowed out the but and the barrel channel. I inlet for the action and made pillars. I used Devcon to bed on the pillars and the bottom metal. I weighed the stock and then poured in molten led to the barrel chanel to bring me right under the 8.5 lb weight limit(to allow for paint). After all fitting was done I painted it like you would a car and added texture. I modeled it after a Pharr stock. It sounds alot easier then it was, but it was well worth it and it only cost me about $100. i dont think I could have bought a better stock because I made it to fit me.
