Just an fyi,
If anyone is looking to get into high power, or you know someone who is, there will soon be an off the shelf gun pretty well suited for it. I was told directly from Savage that in 2011 they are going to make the Model 10 Predator hunter in .260 Rem. Roughly a #4 sporter contour barrel. And I think the MSRP on those is around 700-somethin. Just add a scope and go.

Looks a little on the heavy side to make hunter class...

Their Weather Warrior is an all stainless model also listed for 260, and it will make weight with a scope.

The barrel on the weather warrior is going to heat up a lot in matches, though, as it's a thinner contour. I think the predator hunter would be a better choice, and just shoot it in standard.

Good point! On the other hand, once you burn out the Weather Warrior barrel you can easily replace it with a heavier profile thanks to the way Savage mounts their barrels.

The last comment makes me wonder why more Silhouette rifles aren't built on Savage actions when you can use up a barrel in 1500 rounds.

I've wondered why most manufactures make it so difficult to change barrels!

The reason for the continuing popularity of the 700 pattern actions is it's lighter weight than many actions (years ago, but not necessarily true today) and acessories, I.e. triggers, light weight firing pins and the fact that many accuracy 'smiths will tell you that they can make a 700 pattern action shoot accurately easier than a M70, for example.

There have been some 700s which have been barreled using a nut similar to the M-16 or Savage systems.

The 700 "clones" can be an attractive alternative because they have the machine work done right to begin with and tend to hold their value better than a Rem 700 which has been accurized. The 'smiths in the crowd can comment here.

That said, there is nothing "wrong" with a Savage action. There are a few other rifles which are fine shooters and some of them are more reliable feeding out of a magazine than a Rem. action.

One of the problems with off-the-shelf rifles of any manufacture is that the marketing people are pushing magnums and our rules are in between the weight many companies believe their customers want. Remington keeps chopping barrels off to lengths too short for our game.

So when you run across a rifle that is a good starting point there is no real reason not to get it. It is just that many people now build a rifle to begin with.

I am aware of several people using Savage actions in F-Class rifles who are pleased with them.
