I have always believed that on the rare occasions that you needed to clean your bore, that it took dozens of rounds to get the bore fouled again and accuracy back.

I discovered a method that seems to bring the accuracy back after only about 10 rounds:

Run 6 patches through the bore saturated with Gunscrubber, contact cleaner, any powerful degreaser to remove the bullet lube. Run a few patches thorugh the bore saturated with Kroil, and let it sit for half a hour or so to get between the steel and any metal fouling.

Then half a dozen patches soaked with degreaser again to get rid of the Kroil, and you are done. Takes about 10 minutes of actual cleaning time, 45 minutes of real time, and no bore brush.

The last time I tried this, I fired 15 rounds, and the last 5 at 50 yards (not meters) went into one ragged hole, about 3/8" edge to edge.

That was with Wolf Match Target (not extra) from my 1712.

Saves time and ammo, very easy on the bore, you might want to give it a try.

I haven't noticed that it takes more than 8 to 10 shots to get the gun stable again after cleaning. Maybe I don't get it clean enough.

Cleaning my 1712 with Lilja tightbore barrel to bare metal takes 5 to 8 shots to get back to consistently accurate point of impact with real (non-Aguila) Eley ammo. It took 10-12 shots with the factory Anschutz barrel. The factory Anschutz barrel took slightly longer with SK/Wolf ammo. I think it was around 15 shots at most. In benchrest, where absolute accuracy is more important than in silhouette, even the best of the best barrels tended to fall off on accuracy very slightly after anywhere from 50 to 100 shots, depending on the barrel. A quick cleaning of the bolt face, breech face, and throat could usually bring it back enough for the next target. I haven't shot benchrest in 5+ years, though, and cleaning fads tend to come and go like the seasons. I'd be very suspect of a barrel/ammo combo that actually took dozens of rounds to achieve accuracy and was verified as such on paper. I doubt I'd ever find an accurate lot of ammo for it, as I don't shoot dozens of rounds of test lots when I'm testing and I clean between ammo tests unless I know for sure that the lube is exactly the same.

Oh why not??...They are at least as entertaining as the "My grandpa's JC Higgins single shot bolt action with the safety rusted solid will outshoot any modern rifle made today with only the factory rear open sight and a bb soldered in place of the front sight" type of thread ...
