Hi All, I'm John, live on the coast of NC, and have been lurking this site for about a yr. My shooting Bud [both retired military] and myself have been spending retirement burning up the roads shooting BPCR sil. in VA,GA,PA,& KY. That is our main sport.
I winter on the TX gulf coast in a RV and shoot w/ clubs in Columbus, Mexia and CTSA. Since BPCR is shot on sat. there, I started messing w/ cowboy lever & field pistol at the Sunday match. Thought I might try SB too!!!
I'm LH [right mind] and almost bought a Savage mkII lh ss w/ thumbhole, my thinking was to restock for Hunt. class but then it might not make wt. Then I came across a CZ 452 American LH, but it has a light barrel. Will this hurt me too much ? How does it balance? Savage 7.5lb, CZ 5.9??? I've read the trigger fix's for both and know a lot of people like the CZ, my bud has one, a euro stock early one, and I think the workmanship is not so hot on his. These are the only rifles I'm considering now. What do you all think!!!!?????? TIA, John

The CZ 452 American is a popular rifle for Hunter class. While it might not be purpose-built to fit the exact rules of NRA Hunter rifle, it is an excellent example of a true hunting rifle that works well in silhouette. With work done to the trigger, you can get it set right over 2 lbs, and eliminate excess creep. The rifle will not hold back your performance.

The American has what some believe is a better design of action screws, with an additional screw at the rear of the tang. Most CZ 452 models (Varmint, Trainer, Silhouette) do not have this additional screw holding the receiver in place.

If you get to the point where you would want to modify the stock to accept additional weight, I believe there is room under the barrel channel and/or in the buttstock to remove wood and add some weight to increase the weight and "tune" the balance point.

A CZ 452 with less than $100 in a trigger jov will be capable of getting you into at least AAA. Hell, I did it in SB hunter class with a 10-22 with a green plywood stock (the lizzard gun).

My CZ 452 Varmint with Timney trigger did get me to AAA class. Given decent equipment, the only thing that holds people back in this game is that big mushy lump between their ears. It takes better rifle/scope/ammo to get to the top end of master class, but the limiting factor there is still usually mental preparedness and focus.

CZ is indeed a great choice, isnt that savage a heavy no taper barrel? if it doesnt taper it will not make hunter rules even if changed to a non thumb hole stock

Hi Guys & Gals, Thanks a bunch for the come backs,I called Tin Star in OK. and bought the LH CZ , picked up two extra clips also. I have a FFL but their price was only a few bucks higher and they had 2 in stock, my suppliers were out.They seemed like nice folks.
I'm going to work on the trigger to get as close to 2.5 as I can and when I get time put a thumbhole lam. stock on it.
For good ammo, I have been using Wolf match & match gold, I loaded up at a good price a while back.
I had heard good things about Fed. auto match and got some to try. When I got to the Tx State shoot {BPCR} I found I had forgot my ammo for the 22 match so I used that Fed. in my 40-65 Crossno liner with super results, won my class even. I just took some out to shoot groups w/ lever gun and i'll be using it for that too. The only gun it doesn't shoot in is the contender and it don't like Wolf either.
Now to start hunting a scope, I been reading the old post on the subject, since I recently spent 1K on a scope for Scope class Bpcr, no Loupies for a while. I got a Bushnell to get started with. I just want something NOT MADE in CHINA. Japan ok, found out today Nikon is made in the Phillipines, thats Ok too, been there and had a lot of fun too. The main thing is the tracking, I can live with other things in cheeper glass if that works like it supposed too.
So let me know if you have found a diamond in the rough so to speek.
There are two matches near RALEIGH, NC., about 4hr. from me i'm going to look into.

If you are ever up in the Asheville - Mountains area of NC on the 1 Saturday of the month, stop by Asheville Rifle & Pistol Club four one of our monthly Smallbore Silhouette matches! I know it's along way if you are not already going to the mountians, but keep us in mind.

Also, the 3rd Saturday there are SBS matches near Rutherfordton at Piedmont Gun Club - Nice setup and run by a good group of folks!
