My now 9 yr old daughter has started shooting her scout at the local range with a 4x scope on it. My goal is to get her to where she can be fairly consistent then take her to a match. Right now we are not there yet. I believe we need to put a better scope on it anyway. I am pretty sure a 6-24 would be too much for this rifle, but not sure what to use. Any suggestions ? Weaver's V16 is a lot of scope in a fairly small package for not a lot of money (relative to the quality). Adjusts from 4X to 16X and has raised knobs that lend themselves to adjusting for elevation from animal to animal. Would be my choice for a new shooter. Have them on two starter guns and we have one on the loaner gun our club owns for silhouette.

Thanks Kitty, I recieved a PM with that exact choice as well. I like the idea and Chicken G will get an order in a couple of weeks! She really loves shooting and I would love to help her improve her accuracy to build confidence. I also need to put some foam on the stock to help her cheek placement which would also help her get more consistent. Steven

Let me know if you need me to take a picture of the rigged up foam and tape I mentioned in the PM. It was just an experiment to find the right height and slope for my daughter so I could modify the stock and then pretty it up like I did for another one, but my daughter likes the foam (pipe insulation split down the side) and masking tape so much she wouldn't let me remove it.

You could try a thin (like 1/4" or 3/8") closed cell foam which can be glued together in layers and basically 'laminate' it over the comb of the stock, then shave it down to fit with an electric carving knife (don't let your wife catch you...) and a belt sander or sanding block. Should work pretty well. The denser closed cell foam will give a more solid feel and consistent cheek weld than a spongy open cell foam material. If you stick the first layer on with double-sided tape, then laminate the other layers over that piece, it should come off with no damage to the stock. There are also those "Kick Eez" sorbothane pads that come in different thicknesses - good bit more expensive, but ready to go right outta the box...

Shotgunners use a product called Cheek-Eez. You can get it in at least a couple different thickness. Self adhesive to the comb and shaped like you need. You can laminate one on top of another to get it correct height. When you take it off, use a little Goo Gone and you won't even be able to tell it was on there at all.

Midway had them on sale over the holidays. Just google Cheek Eez and you will find numerous suppliers available.

A 6 to 24 would be a good choice.

Yep, that's what I was talking about - got the name wrong. By far the most 'plug 'n play' solution, but they're a little pricey. If you want to get up and running quickly, that'd be both quick and relatively unobtrusive.
