J&G sales just sent out there monthly email with some used Remington target rifles. Could be made into nice little silhouette rifles.Ad says there are eight, a guy could probably get them to hand pick one for an extra 20.00.

I'd say that's a pretty reasonable price. Keep in mind that the beavertail forend on these is a little too wide to be legal for NRA smallbore but they could certainly be modified. Somebody (not Remington) drilled and tapped these so they're not really collector's items anymore. The triggers are the non-adjustable variety too.

I have one that I bought years ago that was well used, cracked stock, no rear sight, etc. I've had quite a bit of work done to it and now it's the most accurate rimfire I own. I just bought a used 541T HB sporter stock for it so it should be legal for standard class this season if I choose to use it for silhouette.

Boyd's has several stocks that could accommodate these rifles for under 100.00 if a person has even rudimentry woodworking skills. The barrels on these guns look long, wouldn't hurt to have it trimmed back to 22". A gunsmith at the local shop has one of these in his collection, the trigger is target quality unlike any of the 581's that I've had, it's very accurate as well.

Sounds like a good idea to grab one of those and a stock to go with it, and then send both down to Evelio to cut the barrel to 26" or less, turn it down to make hunter weight and pillar bed it into a stock. That should result in a nice smallbore hunter rifle.

Those have a little taper in the barrel already, it would probably make weight without any modification.

The barrel has no taper. The rifle weighs 9 lbs.

Probably right about that but most of the weight is in the stock, 541-T's HB {same basic action, similiar barrel} weigh 6.5 pounds bare with the 24" barrel. It would be a simple matter of cutting the barrel back to 22" or 24" and putting a stock from Boyds or Richards on it. As for the barrel not being tapered I've personally never seen a heavy barreled factory rifle that didn't have a slight taper to it, you might have to use a caliper that measures thousandths of an inch to confirm that but it's there none the less.

The 9# weight is what's listed in the Remington rimfire rifle book. My barrel's been cut and the stock's been modified so I can't verify that weight. My guess is it's close. My barrel's been cut to 22" and I currently have the rifle in a stock that's almost identical to a 541T HB stock without the checkering. The rifle weighs 6# 6oz without the scope so you're right on regarding the weight as the barreled action is basically the same as the 541T HB. The 541X just has a 27" barrel and no adjustable trigger. Neither model had any noticeable taper to the barrel though. They're about as straight as they come. Mine actually measures .810 at the face of the action and .812 at the muzzle. So I wouldn't consider trying to use it in Hunter class if that's what your point is. Either way, I certainly agree with you that these could be made into a nice silo rifle. I've had Voelker thread the barrel & receiver, cut and recrown the barrel on a tight spot, add a match chamber and he did some other work. I certainly can't complain about how the rifle shoots.

I still have a 541-T hunting contour that Brian worked over, it was one of those guns that always dropped the first shot, the gun shoots wonderfully now.
