So when cabeles did not have the neoprene riser the other day I knew I had a diy day planed well a 30min mini project. So insted of cleaning the house while the kids took their naps I did this..

The supplies ..It should include alcohol wipes for cleaning the stock and a rasp file for touch ups.

the base layer of black fabric sports tape (5 dollars)

first roll of epoxy putty (7 bucks) my thriftyness got the best of me I should have spent 3 more dollars and bought PC wood putty it is alot easier to mold and work than the ace brand. I smoothed the putty into the basic shape with the card that the putty came on.

second roll & bore rod check

Image
rough shaping I did not want to do alot of sanding and fancy work as this was going to be a quick job mostly just to see if it will work

All wrapped up in black fabric sports tape and feels pretty solid. We'll see how long it lasts I cant imagine that it would take to much to fix though.

Maybe this stuff is pretty thick like old play-dough. It should work out in the lower front fenders though.

Question here:

Is something like this considered legal for hunter class? I've got a 455 american and I'm thinking of building the stock up with layers of leather held on with barge cement (can be removed fairly easily). But is it legal?

Gents,

Here are a few pertinent rules from the current NRA Rule Book.

3.1 (d) The comb shall not extend above the centerline of the bore, but Monte Carlo roll
may rise 1/2 inch on the off side.

3.1.1 (c) Stock: A hunting style stock; thumbhole-type stocks are not permitted. Attachments, either removable or permanent, are not permitted. Swivels and slings are permitted, but slings may not be used for arm support in shooting. Dimensions may not exceed those described in 3.1(d).

If it was brought to my match would quietly, to the shooter only, question the comb height. This based on the photo, may look different in person. You can be over the bore height if it's on the roll over side. If he thought it was ok would allow it without measurement and let the competitors protest if they objected. Protest it goes to the jury and the rule book comes out. It's a easy check will a cleaning rod clear the comb.

Personally I don't shoot anything unless I think it’s within the rule, don't want to have possible protest in mind when breaking shots. MD I don't have time for carefull equipment checks every match. First match of the year bring scales and rulers rest of the matches eyeball is all they get

I understand the height issue.

But would this be considered an attachment if it is glued in place?

Grant,

As per rule 3.1.1 (c) from the latest NRA rule book, the attachment, even if glued is not legal for Hunter class. Here's the pertinent sentence from the rule.

"Attachments, either removable or permanent, are not permitted."

A guy I shoot with built his own stock entirely by hand (and did a spectacular job of it, I would add), because he wanted to get all of the traits he wanted in a stock but still wanted it legal for hunter rifle.

It seems kind of like a letter-of-the-law vs spirit-of-the-law problem to me that you could build one stock from a wooden board and build another one from an existing stock, build them both to the *exact* same dimensions, and one stock is illegal purely because of the fact that it started its life as a different shape. Not disagreeing that this is how the rules work, but it seems like they could use some clarification to allow for a home made project. There's no practical difference between the two stocks in any way once they're both painted up.

(I'm not suggesting the posted stock here should be legal, as I agree that it looks like the comb height breaks the clear rules about comb heights, but the modification to the comb - dimensions aside - seems to me like it should be permanent enough to be allowable. If he painted over it, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and a custom built stock.)

Only reason I would raise my eyebrows if the pictured rifle showed up at my match would be the comb height. Makes no difference to me who made the stock. Anschutz one of the well-known aftermarket builders or the shooter himself. Even if in doubt would let it shoot. Problem comes from other shooters protesting if the gun starts winning.

High combs work good, you don't have to stretch the not higher than bore rule to get one. Just set the butt plate high with half of it above your shoulder like AR shooters do in service rifle matches.

The comb hight is a little tight. You can see in one of the pictures the cleaning rod does not touching the filler/comb but If I were to compete with the rifle in a big match I would shave it down a bit. The tape brought it up so the cleaning rod does barley touch. I too was curious about the rules as well especially the one about adding to the stock permanently or temporally, But after buying a Pharr RT I cant imagine how people could complain about stock mods as long as they fit with in the confinements of the game.

Whether or not the cleaning rod touches it isn't the true test. If you can look down the barrel from the muzzle with the bolt out of the rifle and the comb doesn't cross the center of the bore, then it's not too high. If I were you, I'd had it as high as I could without being too high. That's where most the comb is for most of the rifles on the line with Pharr or Wooster stocks, and is the whole reason for the doing the project, right?
