For the first time, as an invited guest, I was at a club where everyone..but me...shot prone.
My goodness, they were good. Targets at 100 yds and close to 200 scores. I just saw very small groups.

I shot at 50 yards in a field target position as some call it. I sat on a bag which allowed me to use by thighs as supports for both elbows. I could get 4-5 rounds in the black but sometimes one would get away and I knew it right after the shot. Poor follow through. The muzzle moved left or right , far enough away that I could not even get a look at where the shot landed. I was using a 1712 anschutz with a weaver v 6-16 scope. One of the shooters suggested that I get a hook on the buttplate, presuming that I was having trouble consistently having everything lined up that needs to be. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. He further said that hooks are popular among the offhand shooters for that reason. Two questions:

Can someone clarify what exactly the hook does and if it, indeed, is functional then I want one.

Maybe I would first try it on the synthetic cz 452 silhouette stock before considering an intrusive bit of surgery on my new 1712. Any suggestions how to make it happen for the cz?

Are you selling the hook separately? Looks nice and simple. Is there a marking to indicate where it comes from?
No benchrest rifles for me, though.

The hook will go under your armpit and position the rifle the same place all the time. It anchors the but of the rifle from moving in any direction. When shooting offhand it will make the rifle ballance better in your hold assuming your rifle is muzzle heavy. In our silly game it is not allowed. I hope that explination makes sense to yoiu, I actualy understand what I wrote for a change.

I'm selling the gun. It's a model 54 Metallic Silhouette. Previous owner had butt hook on it.

Butt hooks are used in position shooting mostly in the offhand but also in the other positions by some shooters. The intention is to help with the balance of a barrel heavy rifle and to assist in keeping the rifle in the same spot during a course of fire. THey are not allowed in silhouette, nor are palmrests. As a former position shooter that shot a lot, I never found them to be that helpful, but each person is different.
