Finally want to make the next step, sold my 10/22's and I know not a great gun. But always wanted a 1712 to really compete with. Does the gun need any work besides a scope are is it better to go with a custom gun built. Finally having a hard time finding a 1712, if anyone has one please text me or leave message here. 478-256-6272 I'm in Georgia. By a barreled action from one of the good guys (I use Champions Choice) and have it stocked to fit you and your specific needs....

If anyone in your club has stock 1712 or 1720 in rollover Montecarlo stocks ask to play with them. If the stocks fit that will be the cheapest route. If not, have one built or
put a WTB ad for one in the classifieds. Used will be cheaper but you may or maynot get exactly what you want. If you have one built go with one of the riflesmiths
who know the sport and know what you want and how to build it....

FWIW there are intermediate steps that are improvements over a 10/22 but not as costly as a full frankengun. You may want to explore those before plunking down several thousand dollars...

But then again, it's only money and it's more fun to shoot a nice rifle poorly then a less expensive rifle poorly.....

Most all the Anschutz 1712's shoot very well. I still don't know why so many have the barrels changed. I got one with the McMillan stock and after bedding it went from 1 3/4 inch at 100m to well under 1 inch easily. The 1712 or 54 stocks show up every now and then so you could get a second one and start making changes to see what fits you.

Champions Choice is great to deal with, bought from them more than 20 years. Others are good to but you won't go wrong at CC. Homer will keep his eyes open for scarce rifles let you know when they come in. Plus depending on were in Georgia you may not be so far away from Nashville.

Others may see it differnt but I don't think aftermarket stocks or barrels are improvements on Anschutz factory 1712 set up's. Factory stock pushes the rule about as far as it can go barrels are as good as you can get. Some custom guns look nice if you like the the custom stuff and custom is not a negative, unless the gunsmith installs something wrong, but not needed to shoot scores. Having said that Anschutz can turn out problems too, they are good about fixing if something is wrong.

Unfortunately Anschutz doesn't make the 1712 for those of us that shoot with the proper (left) hand.

Hutch I went the afore mentioned route and got a 1712 feather weight action from CC. At under a grand it was a steal. Steve Wooster put a hunter stock on it and the bottom metal (what some folks call a trigger gaurd, and a better trigger shoe that the dinky aluminum thing that comes from Anny).

My only problem with this set up sort of sounds like it would be perfect for you. Because the rifle has a fwt barrel I feel like too much of the weigh is closer to the action than the muzzle. I've flirted with putting a heavier barrel on mine but damn it I can't bring myself to do it as the darn thing shoots so well.

Whether you go with Steve, Evelio, Pharr etc. you're going to be very happy with what you end up with.

+1 for Champions Choice. I called them last week to order a 1712 Silhouette as a present for myself, ordered at 11am on Friday and picked it up from my dealer on Monday. I was going to get the action, but that had a FWT barrel, and I didn't want to deal with having it stocked right now. Though mine has some barrel/stock contact, out of the box it's first 10 shot groups at 100m was just over 3/4" with Eley Club. Hard to complain about that, though I'll eventually bed it.

You could bed it, but may not shoot as well after. What I do is bench the rifle on a fresh painted Ram swinger after the match. Dirty barrel same ammo. If it groups good best leave it alone. Long run match condition is what counts.

Thanks everyone I'm going to just buy a a1712 rifle, question am I just as we'll to buy new one from CC or try to find a used one. I know they don't pop up to often. And I guess if new I know what I got.

If you order a 1712 barreled action from Champions Choice make sure that it has a safety on it! I recently ordered one it did not come with a safety on it. I contacted Champions and they said that several of them came from the factory with the wrong trigger on them. They said that they would send me the correct trigger when they get some from Germany (been a couple of months now) but have them check on the safety before getting one!
