My sons and I like to target shoot and plink with .22 rifles. Recently my sons have expressed an interest in getting involved in silhouette shooting. At the urging of my wife, I've been selling off some of my toys that have been laying around the house for years. I'm saving up these proceeds to purchase an Anschutz 1712.
I know that the weight classification for Hunter Class silhouette is 8.5 pounds with scope.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a scope and rings that I could mount on the rifle without altering the stock and still make weight.
My price range would be in the $500-$600 range.

The Leupold FX-3 is the scope made specificly for silhouette. They weigh 14.5 oz and come in 25 and 30 power which may be too much for new shooters. The Leupold VX-III 6.5-20X40Tgt is the best choice for family fun and they weigh about 20 oz. Best to get the rifle first then weigh it and see how much you have to work with. You can always shoot in standard class while you get any weight issues resolved. (ps, I havent been to a club match in 30 years where they weighed rifles)

2nd Leupold 6.5x20. Makes weight if you avoid heavy rings. Low power for beginners crank it up as they get more experience

I have a Weaver T-24 on my stock 1712, makes weight with ounces to spare, I don't remember the brand name on the rings, but they are light and cheap. Joy Cox has a stock 1712 also, if memory serves, a Leupold 6.5x 20 sits on top.

My 1712 carries a Leupold 6.5 x 20 and makes weight.

Hey Curlew,
Nobody answered about rings. BKL Technologies makes some great aluminum rings - that will save you some ounces over steel rings. They make them in many different styles and sizes and are great to work with - if you ever do have questions or problems.

If at all possible, look through several folks scopes and ask about their set up. Many people use higher rings (than usual for hunting) for a more upright head position - but you have to find out what works best for you and your kids.
