I'm registering for the Ironman this year....first time ever...... I was thinking of taking my Goldwing motorcycle (and sending my gear with friends). How's the gravel road leading to the range? How long? How rough?

Its not gravel its dirt. Its only 5 miles long and its a little rough in some places (mostly potholes you could avoid on a bike). I wouldn't think you'd have any problems. Its not like its a jeep trail with 2 ruts that you need to power through, its an active logging road and well used by folks for recreational purposes.

Yeah, it was 39 degrees at 7ish this morning. Its a bit colder in the hills where the range is.

Well, wifie (who can't go...doin' her school marm thing, saving the world one kid at a time.....) and I have motorcycled toured a lot..... and I got me an electric vest that runs off a pigtail on the battery...got a good mountain tent, good down bag. Was planning on camping there regardless.... But, what about bears at the range..... Lots of them? Troublesome? Black bear or grizzly?

I think the turkeys are the biggest danger at our range. Usually. Although the bears are out of hibernation now, It would be very very rare for there to be a griz down there. And the little black bears usually aren't much of an issue. There will be a bunch of people camped out there, and you're all armed so I like your chances ;)

I think we have a 5-man contingent headed East in a few weeks. Need to dry out my liver first...
