I have a itch to buy a new rifle but as confused as a fart in a Jacuzzi. Not often that all the good options are present at one time , the closer to March it gets most stores sell all the good stuff and takes until Sept /Oct to get new stock.

I currently have a Marlin 880SQ that works OK but time to take it to the next level.

Options I am looking at with pricing so you guys in Australia and the States can laugh .

1) Brno(CZ) Varmint - R10500 ($895)
2) Sako Quad - R19500 ($1660)
3) Anschutz 64 MPR R18500 ( $1550)
4) Anschutz 1712 R20000 ($1700)
5) Anschutz 1416 R14500 ($1250)

The CZ will do the job , The 64 MPR has my fancy but the 1712 seems to be the class leader , then off coarse the Sako sits like a glove .

What say you ??

That choice is somewhat harder here in the US because the price ratios are different between the rifles here. The Anschutz 1712 price is not much different here than in your list, but the others are generally much cheaper than in your list. Even so, the choice at US prices would be Anschutz 1712 but sometimes budget needs to be taken into account. With the relative prices in your list, the Anschutz 1712 is the very obvious choice.

I went through this a few months ago and for me the 1712 was the clear, and expensive, solution.

I was moving up from a CZ 455 American, itself a fine shooting rifle, but the 1712 balances and feels like a full size rifle. To me the balance and fit are extremely important.


The 1712 just fit me better.

What a batch of Annie lovers here! I have shot a Brno, nice gun. Haven't shot a Sako Quad yet but all other Sakos I've shot have been good. I have several Annies myself, 54's, 64's and a 1712 in the batch, still fall back on my WInchester 52 remake. So my point is get what fits you.

I do love my Sako Quad! Get a Lilja Barrel, it is quite the silhouette slammer.

Guys thanks for the advice , obtaining a firearm licence here is a 2-3 month process with lots of admin and burocracy - so when going thru the process It may as well be for something worthwhile, maybe a blessing as well otherwise I may also have more shooting Irons than to know what to do with

Looked at customizing a couple of 2nd hand Target rifles ( BSA martini , Walther ) but at the end of the day and being honest with myself I think the 1712 Anschutz is a blue chip solution - yes there are a couple of other options ( Winchester Wildcat, ruger 77/22, CZ, savage ) all real nice rifles but not in the league of the Anschutz in my opinion.

With the 1712 I think all agree that it is right up there , all the others may work or will be OK ( stepping stone). I like the SAKO very much as well but it has a bit to many gadgets and stuff I don't really need

Thanks for the pic. Some of the guys that shoot silhouette have been to Africa to hunt, they said that there is an area they hunted that had some spitting cobras and they had to wear glasses, any of those in your area?

The 1712 has a big advantage that isn't mentioned above. If you decide your sick of shooting. You'll get pretty much what you paid for it in a couple years as used 1712's are so sought after.

Now, speaking of the sako. We have a new shooter at Tacoma that has shot his way to master class faster than I've ever seen and he went the sako route as he felt the sako fit him better. This guy (damn if I can't remember his name) has a lot of 3 position experience and uses an Anschutz 2013 for his other game so clearly it's not a weird contrarian thing (we have a couple of these types as well, won't use an Anshcutz or Leupold scope for the sake of being different).

If the sako really does fit you better don't let the crowd sway you. You're the one on the shooting line not somebody whispering in your ear.
