I mounted a Bushnell Elite 6-24x 40mm on my new 1712 using Talley high rings. I centered the scope, i.e., set it in the middle of its adjustment range for elevation and windage. Took it to the range yesterday for its maiden voyage. My initial shots at 50 yds. were very low and took quite a bit of elevation adjustment to get it to hit where the cross hairs were on the target. The 50 yd groups using Wolf Target were very good considering I'm a competitive pistol shooter hopefully making a transition to SB silhouette. When I moved to 100 yds, I ran out of elevation adjustment and was at least 8-9" low.

My question: "Did I do something wrong mounting the scope? Is this normal to require that much adjustment? Is it possible that the receiver and/or barrel are out of spec as someone suggested (I doubt it.). The reason I went with the Talley rings was weight. I'd like to use the rifle to compete in the Hunter class. Thanks and have a good day. If I understand the principle of shimming, I'm not sure I could shim to make up for the lack of elevation adjustment. I'd really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, Tom

depending on scope height from receiver I have had to come up 32clicks for 1.5 scope height to get to rams to as many as 40 clicks for lower scope, I shimmed using a couple of soda cans width or about .020 under rear ring, this is with a 1/4" moa scope

Most folks shim their scopes before they even shoot them. A slight shim adds a lot of adjustment. The other options are things like a scope rail with built in MOA adjustment, or the burris signature rings with built in adjustment (not built in, but available with inserts). Or shim. There are a bunch of threads down in the scope section dealing with this. They recommend everything from beer can strips to masking tape. Good luck!

Remember that if you have a level barrel, 0 moa, and a scope mounted at 0 moa you will have approx only half of your moa up and half down. It will not be exactly the middle of your available moa range but it will be close. Scope ring height, quality of the rings/tolerances, etc will alter this but basically a 26 moa scope will give you roughly 13+- moa.

You can look up some bullet trajectories to get an idea of drop at x yards/meters. This should give you a good idea of how much adjustment from your zero you will need. You need 10-15 moa most likely. If you go too much if will meds up your short distance shooting. I think I would be scared to go to 25 moa base or rings on your scope

Most adjustments from 40m to 100m is less than 10 minutes. Sometimes thoes crazies from colo. set some targets out at 150 yds. That is up another hand full past your ram setting.

Your chicken zero better be in the lower half of your scope adjustment.

Shim or get a scope (FX-III) with more minutes of adjustment. I'm as much as 12-13 minutes at some ranges/ammoz for Rams.
