I discovered that I am REALLY close to the upper limit of elevation for my Leupold scope. In other words if I need anymore elevation I am pretty much stuck.

No big deal, I have a DIP 20 moa scope rail. So on goes the rail and I put on a pair of Leupold Rifleman aluminum rings; good so far except they are too tall (high rings) with the rail.

I find a pair of medium height Warne rings (some of my favorite rings) and mount them up. They fit perfectly and are nearly a perfect height so I don't lose my cheek weld.

The problem? Weight, because they are steel.

Without my turret caps, aluminum thread on Leupold lens caps, but with a magazine in the rifle I can only get it down to 8.3 lbs. that is a full 4.8 ounces overweight!

I guess I need to look for some aluminum rings approximately 0.375 inches tall.

I really like these Warne rings too!

WHOO HOOO!!!!!! That is great news! I thought it was a 8 pound limit! That makes things easier!

Dave, the fix is simple. 3 or 2 thickness of a soda can under the back if the scope as a shim.

Questions:
When adding the soda can shims do you worry about tweeking the scope tube when you tighten the rings?
Do you glue the shims in place and lap the rings to account for the angle?
If your rings are right at max height, do you worry about the shim pushing you over the limit?

Nope to all the above.

Right on Jim. I do put a little dab of rubber cement on them to hold them in place while I adjust the scope for eye relief and level.

Bottom shim is 1 inch long
Middle shim is 3/4 inch
Top shim is 1/2 inch

That keeps the sides from binding in the rings.

I just use Burris Signature rings with the plastic inserts. They can be changed out to help with elevation problems and you don't have to mess with shims, rails, etc.

I stagger the length of my shims too, but keep the longest one against the scope tube.

I personally didn't do anything and mine just worked out fine. However, the base with built in angle keeps the tube in line with its bases. That seems like the best solution to me. Or buy the rings with built in 15 moa. Same concept, no chance of denting a tube.

I have the rail with the built in moa and that is my preference since it allows me to use Weaver type rings.

I use the FX no limit mounts on my 54, they are adjustable for elevation.
