What's best ring set-up for Annie w/ Leup.6.5-20x?

Post by crittershooter »

I have a 1710 and a 54.18MSR, and need top quality rings for both. Would like to get upwards of the max. 1 1/2" and 2", respectively (receiver to bottom of tube, correct?). Both will be used w/ Leupold 6.5x20EFR scopes.

Kindly provide advice and point me to a website or other source from where the rings can be purchased.

Many thanks!

If you want the absolute best quality, then you should be calling up Mr. Marvin. He makes the best that I have seen. I think it's usually better to get a height that fits you, but if you want to get the max possible that will take a lot of the trial and error out of fitting you. I don't have his contact info handy, but I think I have his email address somewhere from him sending out the Conard Cup registration info. If I find it, I'll PM it to you or hopefully someone else can chime in with it.

Thanks, Jason. Well, I don't need the absolute best really, just one that's very well made and, as you indicate, one that's adjustable, so to speak, that can be made to fit me. Seems around the 1 1/2"- 2 " height might be a good place to start. The ones on there now only lift the tube about 5/8" from the very top of the receiver to bottom of straight part of the tube---
way too low.

What are those standard, high quality rings I see on many of the rifles shown on the forum pix? RFL or something like that? Are they good quality and possess the ability to be 'customizable' for the individual's desired ring height? Might you know a source of them?

If you come across Mr. Marvin's info, please forward; don't go to any real trouble.

Thanks again,
C.

Crittershooter, I use a set of Wayne Merier's bases that have .016 cant built in and then I use Millet weaver style windage adjustable rings from low to extra high. The rings I buy at Dick's for cheap so I'm not out a lot if I decide to make a change, and I've made many changes. With this setup you can get the most from the minimal adjustment range of the 6.5x20 EFR. When you get to the limits of a scopes range the adjustments ain't as advertised. I have a 1712 and a Suhl that is set up like a 54.18 and I use the same base, ring, and scope setup on both. The cheek weld, sight picture, and feel are the same just a difference in weight. Helps to make shooting posture consistent. Hope this helps.

Critter...
Marvin Pearson is at (360)746-3429 or at [email protected]
All the things you've heard about Marvin's rings are only half of how good they really are . Beautifully machined and function better than you could
imagine.
BKLs can be purchased through,I believe,Coates Watkins who monitors
this forum.

Hi Critter,

was just curious about what made you decide on those particular heights as a starting point?

dave

and might I add what beautiful weather you folks have down here in Florda! here in Orlando till this Friday for a Microsoft conference... I thought getting out of feeding the livestock was reason enough but it sure is nice to see the sun!

Dave,
It is terrible weather here...sunlight diffuse is around 25%, can't test in that. I'll pm you man.

Chickenchoker,
I will check with Coates tonight and see if he has any offsets, I do not think so. In answer as to how long...that is anyones guess...sometimes BKL responds quickly and other times not.

Delicately put, Mary! BKL makes great stuff on their own schedule... Don't tell Kitty, but I'm still hoping for those 504 bases I ordered over Thanksgiving of '06.

I do not think the problem with slow order filling is really with BKL internally. BKL has always been able to machine their products on a timely basis. The factor BKL cannot control to my understanding is their powdercoating. The last time I ordered direct from BKL the delay was the fault of the company that BKL contracts out their powdercoating to. The powdercoating on all the BKL products I have purchased has been excellent. If I was BKL I might also put up with the waiting periods to get the powdercoating done right.
