2008 NRA SB NATIONALS

Post by lone ringer »

Agustin Sanchez Jr. taking advantage of great weather with very little wind posted two 39X40 (missed one turkey in each match) the first day of competition to win by two points the Standard rifle and by one point the Hunting rifle class. Cathy Severin shot two 37's and Bill M from Texas shot 38 in the Hunting rifle match. There are many shooters in the hunt with scores of 35 or better.
Over 150 shooters are representing more than 20 states and we also have shooters from Australia, Canada, Ireland and Mexico.

Yes, Agustin shot a 40 in Standard rifle and a 38 in Hunting. Cathy Severin shot a 39 to win the Hunting rifle match.

Agustin is leading the pack in Standard rifle by 5 points and the Hunting rifle by one. There has been a lot of other good scores shot, tomorrow I will try to post first three open and class winners scores.

Team wise the girls (read women) Cathy, Laura, and R. Wilson won both team events and set new open women records in the process. I have no way to post pictures now but I will try to do that when I get back home.

As a note of interest I will tell you what kind of equipment Agustin used to compete at this years nationals. The rifles are mine and Agustin had never used them before this year.

For Standard rifle he used an Anschutz 54 mod 1813 whose heavy barrel was cut to 21 inches to make it more balanced with a laminated thumbhole stock made in the 80's by my friend Joe Brickner, the scope was a Target Leupold 24X with a 1/2 inch dot.

For Hunting Rifle he used an Anschutz 54 1808 with a Schnyder (sp) 26 inch SS barrel on a R/T Mark Pharr stock put together by Mark Pharr, the scope was a new style Weaver T 24 with 1/2 inch dot.

For ammunition he used the new Lapua Midas+

Pictures to follow when I get home next week

Jim,
I will be in Colorado from the 22nd (or the night of the 21st)on until the job is complete, anywhere from three to 14 days depending on weather. I will plan on trying to make the match but can't promise it yet as we do work weekends when the weather is right if we have to.
Would like another chance to shoot the McAlice special, that he is promising.

Shakes,
Thanks for the congrats, I was dealing with some emergencies at the awards presentation and not really there fully.
Serious congrats should go to all the record breakers and to Matthew from Australia, winning a rifle that he couldn't take back.
Agustin was his usual machine, quite a shooter to watch the mechanics of his shooting and the communication between him and Tony are absolutely fantastic.
Glad you could make this one, certainly start planning the Southern Nationals for next year. I'm sure we can stir up plenty of BS in Winnsboro and have a blast doing it.

I know, I was fortunate enough to have to shoot next to him for most of the three days and he is truly amazing. I'll tell you all on the forum what he told me the trick to becoming National champ. Take your trigger finger and put it right between your eyes. This game is 90% mental, 5% gun and 5% ammunition. As for the BS I'll bring my shovel to get out of  the pit. Oh yeah it helps to have a really good spotter to.
