Long Rang SB silhouette
After my two NRA approved matches this month, I will be
stting up my first run of my Long Range Silhouette match. I
wanted to offer a fun event to fill up my day at the range
that lets shooters hit the silhouettes from more stable
positions, with the challenge of twice the distance for each
stage.
Long range course of fire:
10 Chickens @ 80 M sitting
10 Pigs @ 120M sitting
10 Turkeys @ 154M Prone
10 Rams @200M prone
Rules:
Any sight will be allowed with overall winners in scoped,
and non scoped catigories.
No bi-pods will be allowed. The rifle must be supported by
the shooter. The use of a sling is allowed and encouraged.
Spotter/scorers may call shots and coach.
The weight limit on rifles will be 15 lbs.
Triggers shall not be prone to accedental discharge. *No
minimum weight requirement.
Awards:
Overall winners in scoped and non scope catigories recieve
CMP ammo.
Other awards :
These awards will not be based on classification since
there arent any, but a system of cash prizes in the form of
"Jugs" (like carp fishing) will be used.
Half of the match fee of $10 will go toward manditory Jug
pots to be awarded to qualified shooters or rolled over to
following matches increasing the size of the pots if not
awarded.
Manditory jugs :
All Chickens $1
All Pigs $1
All Turkeys $1
All Rams $1
All 40 hits $1
Other Jug pots will be offered but not manditory. Shooter
must be in the pot for that match to be eligible.
Voluntary jugs:
1rst target on each stage $1
Last target on each stage $1
1rst and last target on each stage $1
50% or more hits $1
35 hits or more $1
Only one jug per competitor per match will be awarded. If a
shooter qualifies for more than one pot with a single score
the higest value pot will be awarded.
If more than one competitor qualifies for the same pot, a
shoot-off will determine the winner of the pot.
I think this may take off and be something fun and
rewarding for all that participate. It will not be easy. I
hope that this will lure some hard holders to my clubs
matches especially if a jug or two get's up to some serious
money.
I call it "Small Bore Saturday" All match fees and jug pots
come to $25 for a full day of shooting. If you are good
enough you could walk away with some cash, and some ammo.

My club
My club is the Polk County Gun club in Columbus, NC.
www.polkcountygunclub.org I do not have anything on the website about this match because it is new, and I am not the webmaster, But I will be making a short movie for posting online. It could turn into something big with NRA approval if this catches on. There are just so many wonderfull rifles out there not doing anything.
I did my testing yesterday with my CMP H&R M12 with Redfield Olympic sights. The Rams at 200 M require a zero of 30 to 32 min of elevation using CCI standards.
I suspect it will take a little less in the heat of summer. It could be as little as 25 min depending on the ammo. I hit three Rams in a row demonstraiting the concept to my club president just as the light was fading away. Within minutes it was too dark to shoot.
Anyone familiar with position shooting should have no problem scoring well, but a perfect score will be elusive for all but the best marksmen.
I wanted to make up something fun that rewards new people for taking on new skills while honing the skills of more established shooters, with fundamentals in common with other disciplines. I hope to get more people exposed to NRA High power and service rifle competiton through this type of competition.
It will be cheaper to do than HP, and more fun than Mini Palma.
I just thought of something I could make an award for the grand agg for the day. Hmmm....... We're gonna have a great day at the range, and a great summer building this up. Give it a try !

I see forgetting where your at, or not changing it back after shooting the Rams could cause for some interesting SB matches if one does not recheck their zeros..Bob Mc Alice wrote:Mordecai....a full turn up past your smallbore ram setting will get you close to a 200m zero, depending on ammo. We do it here after matches sometimes.
Bob, will regular mounts work or do you need to get the special angled mounts to give you the range for your scope adjustments

While on the long range rimfire subject, have any of you fired at targets at really long range? Out at CRC we have shot off the bench at 12 inch diameter hard thin plates at 300m....385m...and even a 20 inch plate at 500m. They ring like a bell when hit. You need really calm conditions for repeated hits. Turn the scopes down to minimum X for a full view, max out your elevation knob, put the target at the bottom of view...or find a spot high on the berm like a rock or clump of grass to aim at. What a hoot to chip paint at these extreme distances.
