Mimimum for Air Rifle Silhouette

Post by caseyboy »

What would you consider to be the lower end of the velocity spectrum to reliably topple the rams? Is 500 fps sufficient?

Will you hit them and will they go down if you do??? ... the answer is yes. But, you are getting to the low end of the spectrum and really have to plan your shots in any amount of wind with a low velocity target rifle.

Also consider the length of time it's taking the pellet to exit the barrel and flight to the target. I recently started shooting air rifle and the difference in velocity between 22 and air rifle makes it extremly imnportant to hold thouogh the shot. The lower velocity just increases the pellet time in the barrel.

Good points. So the faster the better for a number of reasons. Thanks. I am toying with the idea of starting up Ar Silo. There are three clubs locally that host SB, and I think there would be enough interst to start up AR.

Victoria, British Columbia. The Canadian gun registry laws say that anything under 500fps is not classified as a firearm and therefore does not need to be registered. Manufactures have de-tuned numerous air rifles so that they are just under the limit. I was just curious if 500 fps was enough. I think it would be a great way to get people interested in AR silhouette if they could use what they had.

If that's the case go for it. I thought you were looking for best case. You'll be able to have some fun at 500 fps.

caseyboy, I agree with ppkny, go for it, you'll still have fun and it will certainly teach the importance of a good hold and especially a good follow through.

I picked up a AirArms MPR for Target class and it shoots about 495 FPS and had no problems taking down rams with it, but it can get exciting with a little wind out at that distance. You can also use any target rifle as well in this class as long as it doesn't have a butt hook.

Good to know Bob259. What weight and type pellet are you using?

I'm also in Victoria,

Which club are you thinking of using for this?

Because the limit is on velocity and not energy a 500ft/sec .22 airgun should have an easier time knocking them down.

I have a source to cut-out the silhouettes if your serious about getting this started then fire me off a PM and we'll get the logistics sorted out. I've been wanting to get FT/HFT going locally for a while but haven't found much interest. The shotgun range at VFGPA would be great for that.

Hi Grant,

I was thinking up at the VFGPA range. If there was enough interest, I would be willing to run matches on some sort of a regular basis. There are three matches a month on the lower island for smallbore and Port Alberni has started Highpower. I think air rifle would be a way to attract new shooters.

Well I just bought an airrifle, but it's HPA so I suppose I'm limited to shooting standard rifle.

Either way I'd like to start shooting silhouette with it, so fire me off a PM and I'll take some sort of basic proposal forward at the next club meeting.

Cheers,
Grant

500 fps is really rough over 30yd or so.
I always knew when the HW 55 needed a rebuild, when drop got too high and groups went bad.
Basicaly it fell apart on turkeys and was hopeless on rams until the rebuild got the velocity back up to high 580 with 8gr pellets.
