World champs for air rifle?

Post by fortyforty »

Hi all,
Has there ever been a world championship for air rifle silos?
Is there going to be one this year?

I Googled the question in vain, so thought I'd ask here.

Most well-attended Air Rifle Silhouette matchs here in the states annually are the Southern Nationals in Winnsboro, LA. and the Texas State Match in the Houston area hosted by the Steiger family.

When is PSteiger's Texas Match this year?

Does anybody know of any other "big" Air Rifle Silhouette matchs in America besides the above two?

Okay Mary - thanks for that...now do you know if SA has a web site for this event, that one can visit and read up on all the relevant information?

I would have hoped that with the relaxation of the rules for air rifles, particularly around the adjustability of the stock, more silo shooters would have found that discipline much more attractive than the restrictions imposed by the rule makers for rim-fire.

I personaly have given up on rim-fire as I find that as I've gotten older the stocks are just too difficult to control, and way too stressful on the body for me to be bothered perservering with any more. (I'm 63 years old, and full of arthritis).

I find the air rifle however, is still an absolute joy to shoot because I can actually alter it to get it to fit me. So much so, that in my twilight years, I'm quite keen to travel to other countries to pit my skills before I get too old and have to give the game away altogether. Hence my question above: why isn't there more news about air rifle world championships.

Is it a growing sport in the US, (or anywhere else for the mater), or merely the poor second cousin not given serious credibility by the masses.

Thank you for that Bobby.
I would be interested in attending the Southern Nationals.
Can you tell me when they are held?

fortyforty, if I can still function when I retire, high on my list of goals is to make Air Rifle Silhouette more than "the poor second cousin" to Smallbore and Highpower Silhouette. Your 4 paragraphs summed up my feelings and conclusions about Air Rifle Silhouette.

One of the happiest days of my life was when my giant son stated that he did not like the family 2002CA in aluminum stock and that he was going back to the lowly Walther LG30 for Target SIlhouette. I immediately grabbed the 4 mm. T-handle and in a minute or so had it fitted to a much smaller, heavier frame and shorter neck, mine. I think more of that 2002CA that I do of my house. What would it have taken to adapt a Smallbore Silhouette Rifle from a thin 6 foot three to a heavy-set 5 foot ten. Even more what would it have taken in time and money to get that same rifle back to the original fit for the tall thin guy with the present Smallbore rules?

Also, there are a lot of 20 somethings out there that kept their Air Rifle after shooting in College or High School. I have talked to a few young adults who told me they just could not part with their Air Rifle after living with it night and day for more than eight years. They were excited to see that all they had to do was buy a scope and a set of rings and enjoy competiton with the rifle they had lugged all over America or even the World.

This is what I envision for the future. A large Air Rifle Tradeshow like the SHOT show in a climate controlled building with vendors and manufacturers. Plus a registered indoor Air RIfle and Air Pistol Match going on at the same time in the same building. I have already figured out a cheap way to anchor the resettables to a concrete floor without marring the concrete.

Maybe just a pipe dream but maybe things will fall into place where I or somebody else can make it happen.

You should be ready to shoot on Wednesday if you come to Winnsboro for the Southern Nationals. There is a approved Qualifier Match on that day that is fun to shoot. Limey and the Winnsboro bunch want the experienced shooters to shoot that Match also so the new guys can get a feel for what it is like on Thursday and Friday.

Now Bobby..Pat and I managed to keep Limey under control at the last air rifle in WInny. It was after the air rifle was over that Limey gathered up support for his games!!
Real question is Pat going to beat E in Texas states today?

fortyforty, come on out and join us at WInnsboro, we have fun and Ducky has been promising some great prizes.

The distances are 20, 30, 36 and 45 yards.

We run just one class 'any air rifle'in Oz. Which basically makes it a PCP class (pre-charged pneumatic) but with the arrival of much more affordable rifles e.g. BSA Hornet etc. you can get into this great sport without too great an expenditure.
