CZ 452 vs the rest

I have been shooting my CZ 452 for about 2 months, in less than ideal conditions here in NH. I"ve done the Yo Dave trigger and firing pin, floated the barrel and it shoots well. Trigger is crisp and 3 lb. My question is moving forward, is there another rifle to concider as I improve besides an Anchutz 1712? Is there enough of an equipment difference in a Weatherby XXII, a Kimber HS or any rifle in the $1000 range? I'd like a better stock than the 452 offers up, but I can like with it. So, any since in putting $ into anything except a 1712?

Many of us have been down the road you describe. I've had a couple of 581 Remingtons built up with stocks that fit me the best any stocks have fit. Their balance is great. Now if I could only get a trigger on either one to match up with my 1712, I could replace the 1712 . Seriously, if the 1712 had a bit more out front, I couldn't imagine anything better.
I can say the same for my 40-X. For -Hunting Rifle the Jewell trigger is excellent , but the balance (due to the receiver weight) is back between my hands too much (yeah...I know, a GOOD shot can make it work).

Short answer on the two mentioned rifles, Kimber and Weatherby, vs the CZ in price difference. NO. As mentioned in the previous post ymmv, but another to look at is a Remington 541, or a WInchester or Browning 52 (remade in the 90's), all of these can still be found used.
The 1712 is a great gun, but several have made it well into the master class with all of the above, it is more a matter of fitting the equipment to you and finding the right ammo.

I have recently decided to give silhouette another try. I really enjoy the game and the only reason I have not shot in more matches is the distance I must travel to them. Right now I'm shooting a 452 Varmint. Honestly I can't tell the accuracy difference between it and a 1712. I have shot some one inch groups with the Varmint at 100 meters. Most groups are between 1" and 1-1/2". The 1712 never did any better group wise and this shooter could never take advantage of the clearly superior two stage trigger. I guess more seasoned shooters can, but I could not.

So I don't think a 1712 or any other rifle gives a beginner any advantage. I guess what I'm trying to say is I have found equipment is the least of my worries at this stage. Everybody likes nice equipment including myself, but at least in my case I have found high dollar guns and scopes won't help my scores in the least. The only thing that can is thoughtful practice.

Shoot the 452 until you know that the rifle is holding you back. How will you know it's holding you back? Well, eventually you will pick up someone's 1712 in a Wooster or Pharr stock and that'll put the lust in your heart.

Meanwhile, there's nothing in between the 452 and 1712 that's worth the extra money. The Weatherby comes close. I had a Rem 541 and its too light, too pretty and you can't easily get 5 rd magazines for it.

I am really glad to read this post. I have been wondering the same thing.

I hope to take my Browning 52 to my first wildcat style match Saturday. This may be an awakening in me, as I last shot competitively offhand before this Browning was made! It is also good to know that I can shoot the 541S as a bona fide shooter.

Good to know that the Annies would likely at my stage of competence at the moment not be a noticeable change. And I thought that as well...

Hello all. I am new to this and I have not shot a formal match yet. I have been practicing with my T-bolt sporter and I have definately caught the silhouette bug. My first shoot is April 3, and I can't wait. I have ordered a 452 american and I am wanting to shoot the hunter class.

My question is, do folks internally weight their stocks to change the balance of the rifle? I have read of some drilling the butt of the stock to reduce weight. How about adding weight in the end of the forearm? Keeping in mind to keep the total weight under the class limit. Thanks for your help.

1st, Welcome to the addiction! In answer to your question, yes there are some cases of weights in various parts of the stock to help the shooter that is shooting them. Each person has their own preferences and physical limitations, so as long as you meet the overall weight and stock dimensions you are good to go at the nationals, most local clubs are more relaxed at the monthly matches and it is a shoot what you brung, or borrow mine... Look forward to meeting you at a match somewhere soon.

i am a little suprised you are ordering a CZ american, what about the t bolt do you not like? all i have shot ahve been splendid. just curious, dont get me wrong i love my CZ.

Dave, I love my T-bolt and it shoots well. The thing that started me looking is the trigger. Very crisp, but the lowest I can adjust it is 3lb 13 oz. and no aftermarket options that I know of. Fine for the hunting/plinker that I use it for, but I would prefer to be closer to the 2lbs that I can get away with. I wanted to set up a dedicated silhouette rifle, but could not swing the dough for the annie at this point. If I like it as much as I am think I am, I am sure I will head down that road full speed. I am gonna put the Timney trigger in and a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20 with the target dot and see what happens. I am still undecided on rings, thinking Leupold or CZ. OK, I'll admit it, I just want another rifle. Thanks for the info!!! Mary, see you there!!

Yoffione...look into the BKL rings for the weight. goodshootinginc.com carries them, not as good of quality as the original manufacturer, but they are not as expensive both in weight and costs as the Leupold.

The 455, CZ could not tell me when will have LH in production. My marlin 39a will be on standby. Since we are indoors, I will use the CCI Blazer, which I have a case, that worked the best in my 39a. In the meantime, until we start outdoors in Mid April, do some of you have AMMO suggestions where to start with trying out in my CZ 452? Match and practice? Thank you for any input.

Wolf Match Target/SK Standard Plus are good mid-priced brands to try.
