Re: newbie wash outs
Go for it, just like most club sports, it all depends on the members, many think the club is there just for them, forget them they'll never do much to help, just find the ones that know the club means everyone and that new blood keeps everything growing.Mt_Medic31 wrote:Byron, those are some EXCELLENT ideas. Good luck, half the battle is won, you know something needs to be done and you're going to do something about it!

SUPER NEWBIE !!
Hello all !! I am a complete newbie !! Never shot a match, didn't own anything that I would consider a "silhouette" rifle. Sure I have plenty of 22's...almost too many (never have too many). I went to a match in Harrisburg, PA last month....really enjoyed the folks there. Everyone was nice and helpful with my never ending questions. I did this to learn what was going on there. I did take a rifle along with me, but I saw everyone was shooting high end stuff…. so I didn’t even get it out of the case. Yea a little embarrassed about equipment. Besides it gave me another reason to buy more gun stuff !! I did this with benchrest as well. I shot br for several years (talk about expensive ...you have no idea). So, with all the talk about getting someone to shoot in this sport...advertise some more my two cents. Smallbore is a great way to keep shooting without all the big expense of reloading. I agree that all ammo has increased significantly. While .22 ammo is still on the rise…entry level match ammo is still relatively inexpensive. While I was at the match I was allowed by a shooter to try his gun on an empty lane. I shot 15 rounds and hit ONE pig !!! Talk about humbling…yes I'm one of those guys that "can shoot" !! But Silhouette !!! Not soo much !! I've shot all the bench stuff from 100 thru 1000 yds, even hold a record for 200 meters...and still holding after almost 10 yrs. Yes, a pat on the back for me !!
Silhouette has a new interest to me as it's very hard and yet so simplistic… to me anyway. I just picked up a Kimber HS last week, haven’t shot it yet. Still waiting on parts to put it together (rings/bases). I’m super excited about hitting maybe 5 out of 60 at there club next month !! I don’t expect more than that…I haven’t really shot anything off hand except normal hunting stuff…and a lot of bench stuff. I really like shooting small groups but do it for fun now !! I look forward to increasing my skills more than number count at first !! I have also tried to get my buddies interested in this as well. It’s hard once you tell them it’s offhand !! I will continue to advocate this sport even though I’m a new guy to it !!
Thanx to all who post realitive and meaningful post !!

I like your enthusiasm. From a former stool shooting, paper punching and other wise boring shooting dicipline guy...WELCOME to the steel shooting game. You will become a better off hand shot, I promise you.

Re: newbie wash outs
People can be funny....like driving a 40K vehicle, but wont buy $5 or $6 box .22 ammo
I like to do two things when I am at the "regular ranges"...talk to .22 shooters. bring up sillywet. And loan out some partial boxes of RWS ammo
Silhoutte is the best shooting game ever IMO.
And it is a notable achievment of the Haltom City Club that makes it so for myself and this area I am in. that needs to be said!
You would not believe how helpful they are, till you show up with an unsighted rifle. next thing you know, you have a spotter and a rifle tech next to you
race guns, yay. Only it is better when the fellow shooters make you feel good about having one, not making you feel forced to get one.
but then I consider my 1968 S-A Mk10A to be a racer. lol.
One other factor... I bet all the regulars and semi regulars have kids that are out of the house, and a Wife that wants them out of the house
So the weekends are free and clear!! woohoo.

Re: newbie wash outs
No doubt its not an easy sport that you can just "BUY" your way into like some other shooting types, but thats what makes it great. I started shooting at 9 and only 3months ago found the sport of silhouette. And for all the newbies, In the beggining I was only hitting 5-8 animals. Now in a 3months and a lot of hard work!!! I average about 17-19 a match, with my all time best being a 22. So like everyone is saying, its a great sport but dont expect to be the best in a few practice sessions. Welcome the challenge, embrace the challenge, and you'll soon be loving the sport, and remember just to compete against yourself at first. And as far a discouraging, try attempting to knock off Hammy for 3months and counting, but I have had a few close ones and I know Ill get him soon!!!

To beat our mentor Pops and his rifle Blue Thunder. FL state champ for over ten years in a row in both rifles.
Malinios is a good spotter, and can shoot when pushed. Get the three of you (Hammy, Malinios and you) together and work on little details.
