I am also interested in getting started shooting silhouette. I live 25+/- east of Columbia MO. I have read AZ shooter's site about silhouette shooting, so I have the general idea, but I need some guidance. I'm not really sure if me rifles will work or not, or when/where to go to get started. I have been playing with these 10/22's on a bench for a while, and played a lot of games on RFC. I guess I am just bored with shooting by myself on the weekends, want to better my offhand shooting skills, and put these rifles to work. Both 10/22's function and shoot pretty well with Wolf MT. Any help for a noob would be much appreciated

welcome! you are in luck! both 10/22 and nice they are, are suitable for std rifle as long as they dont weigh mire than 10.2#
also the 39a if it is 8.5# or less is "legal"for hunter 1/5. if you take the scope off you get to shoot 2 classes of cowboy silhouette, rimfire and pistol cartridge, although 22lr is way light for the heaver 1/2 size game.

laods of info on this site, the best of advise is get out there and shoot.

Thanks for the reply. I think all three rifles will make weight. Now all I need is to find out where/when to shoot in my area.
I have heard there is a place in Columbia and one in Warrenton, I am nearly in the middle of the two.

A 10/22 is hard to shoot offhand. That said, they can be very accurate and if you learn to shoot them offhand, you will become a very good shot. You do need to make a shell deflector to keep the hot brass grom hitting the person that is shooting next to you. If you can heat and bend plastic, an old eley boxtop will make a good deflector. what is it about the 10/22 that makes them difficult to shoot accurately, and how do I go about this deflector. Is there any certain way it needs to be made?

Get over to the Green Valley gun club in Columbia, they have monthly SB silhouette matches. Check their website for the exact schedule.

Or the St Louis Benchrest Club, which hosts about 6 or 7 SB silhouette matches per year. They are actually located in Wright City, so probably 50 miles or so from you.

thanks for the info, I just checked out Green Vally they have a match on June 26, and I see there is a match sooner in Owensville on June 12th. I think I will go to Owensville and get an idea of what I need or if I have what I need. Then go do some mad practicing. I may need a local to take me in under their wing and show me the ropes..

Chromie...welcome to the addiction, either of the 10/22's will probably work in the standard class as is (they may be pushing the weight limit a bit). The lever...without the scope is a great one for lever action silhouette, another version the fine experience of trying to knock down those pesky animals.

If you have the time to show up at Winnsboro LA next week (June2-5th) you will see, learn and even have the opportunity to shoot more types of silhouette smallbore and air rifles, and more coaching and taking under the wing that can be described. That is pretty much true across the board with silhouette shooters, but for some reason (must be the food, games??? and most of all the door prizes) that there seems to be the largest single gathering of smallbore silhouette shooters every year during the first weekend in June at Winnsboro, aka the Southern Nationals.

Lots of great folks from Missouri come to this gathering, I look forward to seeing you at a match soon.

I would love to make that shoot, however, I can not. The two local shoots coming up next month will be the soonest I can get away.

I have an Intensity Optics 6.5-20x44 I can put on one of those rifles.

Chromie, as I answered in your other post...shoot the Intesity optics, but don't be surprised if the first thing you want is to change the scope. Sorry you are going to miss Winny but plan on it next year, always first weekend in June. Enjoy your matches, I have yet to shoot a silhouette match anywhere in the country and not have fun and meet some great people along the way....not to mention eat some great food.

hi Chromie,
most of the issue with an auto loader for silo is dicepline, shot to shot speed.etc. if it shoots lights out and you practice off hand you shouldnt have too many issues, the action will have a different feel in the recoil aspect, a lot of junk moving so to speak. i cannnot shoot them caause i am weak minded.


you say you shot bench restt with them, i assume they have triger mods? what are you running for trigger? just curious.

i say run what you have until the hook is set deep then your road will lay out before you, all yellow brick like.

The 10/22s have a slow lock time and the weight and noise of the bolt moving is disturbing. Don't ler this discourage you from trying the 10/22 The one I shot as a hunter rifle was very accurate with Eley Black box.

The deflector I made was a small piece of plastic bent in a u shape that clipped on to the scope base. Then I glued another slightly bent piece of plastic on top of that for the deflector.

whew! cant argue with those groups. is that the intensity scope? if it makes weight give it a go, just because we have no experiance with them does not mean you wont have good luck. i had a buddy with a cheap tasco , shot it for years. others wont last a match.

i am rooting for you to have good luck.
