New to Silhouette
Hi,
Been lurking here for a couple of years. Just bought a CZ 452 Varmint to further my silhouette efforts. Have been shooting a Henry lever. I practice at home on 1/5 targets at appropriate yardages using SK and Wolf Target mostly... some Elay, Fiocchi, Aguila Match the Henry shoots them all about the same. Can't wait till the 452 gets here and see what it likes.
I have not been to any matches yet, I just shoot at home at my own targets that I got from Quality Targets. The closest gun club that offers Sil. is Old Fort Gun Club about 60 miles away. My question is this...Do you have to be a member of a Club to shoot at the matches? I am NRA already. I don't mind the yearly fees if they are close enough that I can use the facilities regularly. But living out in the country in Arkanasas on lots of land it is easy to just step out the door and shoot in the yard. I would like to compete and also get to know other shooters instead of just for my own amusement, I could amuse others instead
.

Re: New to Silhouette
Rob,
Most silhouette matches are open to the public. There are some matches that require NRA membership, but even that is getting less stringent.
Welcome to this great bunch of shooters.

Re: New to Silhouette
Ok, gonna see if I can do this. I want to show you all my targets from Qualiy Targets. They came unpainted, 1/4" steel....and then I painted them International Harvester Red (because that's what I had). What is a good visible color for these, I was thinking Orange but I have seen some white. I am sure the red will be too dark but I didn't want them to start rusting.

Nice, do you have a range set up with berms?

Re: New to Silhouette
Kevinbear,
I do have a home range with berms behind each target station. The wind finally died down enough this evening to get a little practice in. My biggest problem is just holding on the target long enough to get a good shot. Nothing like bieng able to step out the door and do some shooting.

I'm envious of your range, I can shoot an air rifle at my place but nothing bigger.
Trigger control and follow through will go a long way to hitting targets until your hold gets better. If you shoot alone you'll naturally learn follow through calling your own shots, trigger control with the two stage Anschutz trigger should come in the first carton of ammunition.

Re: New to Silhouette
I grew up in the country, on a ranch and have not always lived in such a rural area but we moved back out(of civilization) a few years back. I could even shoot HP here if I wanted to go that route, got that much space but .22 ammo is so cheap, even the expensive stuff if cheap compared to .308.
But I agree that trigger control and follow through are key and I think ability to hold will come. It is getting better already. I am just not that used to scopes and the magnifcation makes the movement so obvious.
