For you the students of the sport of rifle silhouette
Jerry Webster has done a great job researching and publishing on his web site its vast history (I had almost forgotten my contribution to his article).

You are welcome Rick, I too had at one time that booklet that you are talking about but do not remember where it is now.RBriscoe wrote:Tony,
Thanks for the link. The "exclusive of sights" part of the rule is not an especially practical way of administering things. Changing the weight and including sights makes more sense and also explains why people would have been weighing rifles at the early U.S matches to see what a practical weight limit, with sights included, might be as I am sure that more than a few people had scope mounts that were not readily removable without losing zero. If I recall correctly, the Hunter's Pistol rule was changed for similar reasons and then adjusted to meet the weight of commonly available equipment combinations.
It is interesting to observe the way equipment and techinques have evolved as siluetas metalicas changed from an occasional "pick up sport" to a regular competition. There used to be a small NRA booklet that had a number of articles by or about different people's techniques which were apparently based on presentations at Nationals. I had a copy at one time, but I am sure it got it has been lost. I wonder if anyone still has a copy.
Anyway, this has been interesting clearing up some of the history of our sport.

Ernie, I got the information about the 385 meters turkeys from Rodolfo Rizo one of the greatest rifle silhouette champions Mexico has ever had. Rodolfo is in his 70's and won his first National championship when he was 11 years old shooting against grown ups.John wrote:Tony,
You probably have more accurate information than I do! lol

Tony,
There are grown-ups in silhouette? Are you certain about that? lol
One day when we're at a match, I need to buy you dinner and listen. Next year at PeEll maybe? (I do not plan to be in Kalifornia anytime soon! lol)
You have a lot of silhouette knowledge that I'd like to hear.

I'll buy a Friday evening dinner if you come up to Pe Ell next year, Tony. I'll even bribe you with one or two of those new Marlin 57 hammer springs if I haven't gotten them to you before then. I keep hoping to have time to make another batch, but it has't happened yet...

It may have been addressed already, but the story behind the distances for the rimfire game is that 100 meters is 1/5 the distance of the highpower game. Likewise 77M is 1/5 of 385 and so on. Hence, 1/5 size targets at 1/5 the distance.

Tony, I got the Gates book today. First couple of chapters are great and full of a lot of history but I realy don't care about his pistol silhouette. Thanks for the tip on the book.

K Danz, we are well aware of the 1/5 size and distance. The question was by who and when the game was invented.K Danz wrote:It may have been addressed already, but the story behind the distances for the rimfire game is that 100 meters is 1/5 the distance of the highpower game. I think the NRA started sanctioning SB matches around 1977 maybe a bit earlier and the first SB Nationals was held in 1979.

You are most welcome Jerry. On page 68 there is a picture of shooters lined up waiting to have their rifles inspected and I am the last one on that line. The picture was taken at the Ben Avery (Black Canyon) silhouette range in 1978.Jerry G wrote:Tony, I got the Gates book today. Any of you geezers still have your "card" that scores were recorded on before we had books? I think the first books came out in 85 or 86.
