just to pick up on the 12x theme, I believe that Theo Cassidy Jnr shot most of his Australian records using a 12x leupold. The chairman or controller could confirm though!

Jason, seems like you have no one who agrees with your above advice. I certainly don't. I think Bob spoke for himself and I can't disagree with anything he stated.

I suspect if you set forth your proposal on a site that caters to ugly, fat, under-sexed, nagging, bitchy housewives you would find more agreement and maybe even a little adulation.
Heh.... Those words are not my own. They are just passed along by a past national champion. His point was to buy one rifle/ammo/combo if you could only afford one of the best instead of more than one "pretty good" setup, as fit to the shooter and consistency (that a factory Remington trigger just can't produce) were the most important. By contrast, here are words of yours from a few months ago.

That is, I rode (pedaled) my road bike out there, I think it was 67 miles roundtrip. Just have found other things taking up my weekends, hope to get out and shoot some this fall.
Yep, I know which I'll listen to this time, and who I think that the Guru should listen to so he could give Bonner some tough competition... =))

... although I have to say that I do agree with most everything else you've written on here. 8)

I think our Controller (Dooga Dave) is looking for ET as he has been very quiet.

Jason, Believe me the fact that McAlice has too many guns has nothing to do with the fact that he can't keep up with Boner. At the match in St. Louis last year, after about every shot he was swapping spit and pawing on his wife, it was getting to be nausiating as a matter of fact. It did bring three things to my mind though. First they just left a motel, if one of them had an itch, why didn't they scratch it there? Number two is that now I know why Grandpa and Grandma porn isn't all that popular (not that it hasn't been done, I bet), and the third thing that entered my mind it that the fact I was riding in the passenger seat of their car, and I'm sure that it had been "soiled" but when!

They are good scopes for HP fwt1712, no reason a top shooter couldn't do very well with them. They show up often on the used market for $250. on up to $375. depending on condition and knobs option. Three of them I bought new, the others used in premium condition. Of the six there are two each with the fine duplex, itty bitty 1/8th dot and the CPC tapered fine crosshair. I jump from one to another most of the time forgetting which rifle has what reticle. :? No matter, line them up and squeeze the fire control mechanism. CLANK...SMILE...DO IT AGAIN. 8)

(that a factory Remington trigger just can't produce)......unless it has been tweaked and massaged to repeatable perfection by the likes of yours truly. :D

"if you could only afford one of the best"

Jason, thanks for the clarification. Given your financial situation, I would have to agree 100% with the former national champion. However, your situation and Bob's are not the same. Bob described his situation and motivation very convincingly above. I would add my own opinion, and that is I think Bob gets a great deal of satisfaction and reward from putting together his silhouette rifles and tweaking them to such an extent that they perform very closely in comparison to the full out custom jobs. Needless to say, I was not impressed by your uninformed retort. Maybe in the future, in these types of situations, you might want to phrase your inquiries starting with "help me understand" or "please explain" instead of "why not."

Now that we have that put to rest, maybe you could explain this idiotic statement?

"I bet you could even trade a couple of them for a scope better than that 12X scope."

Finally, with respect to the Beckley post above, I am absolutely in the Bob McAlice, Rhonda Rousey camp on that subject.

And WTF is with searching past postings???? I was going to try that with you, but when I saw you have almost 4% (so much for quality over quantity argument in this case?) of all the posts ever made on this site, I decided to go load ammo for the new DDM4 V5.

I hope Bob knows that I was joking and I mistakenly assumed that you would also. My apologies for assuming that you would understand my intent. As for the "idiotic" comment and your previous insult, I'll pass on joining in on an Internet pissing contest. Have a nice day.

I know those are not your words Jason, but I think this idea is counter productive to attracting new HP shooters. A full out "one of the best" custom builds can easily exceed two thousand dollars. Over the years I have enjoyed sharing with you guys and gals some of things I have done to turn a low cost pawnshop wreck into a shooter for reasonable cost. The two long action 700's now 7-08's in that photo a prime example. I'd use either in any match with confidence. I have put up the pictures and stories to show the prospective new HP shooter he still can compete with a common hunting rifle. The expense of getting into HP is one reason I hear all the time keeping me from gaining new shooters to to join us at CRC. In fact, I have lost some shooters due to the costs involved shooting HP. It sounds like the person is suggesting you can not be competitive with out spending thousands of dollars on a top notch rifle build. Most of us are not into this game aspiring to become the next national or even state champion. I and most I know shoot it because it is a lot of fun. I have proven over and over that "pretty good set ups" can be competitive for under a grand, in some cases way under. I wish I had people lined up to hand a loaner rifle to. We really do not have anyone here in the smallbore ranks interested in getting into HP as of yet, if at all.

I usually try to keep a loaner or two around, also. Those are usually factory rifles that have modest upgrades like a trigger job and pillar bedding, if any. They also typically wear scopes of somewhere around 12 to 18 max power. Sound familiar yet? :) I was just amazed at the picture of all of those rifles that seem to be mostly the same. I don't envy the gun cleaning you have to do after a day of shooting a few hundred rounds through half a dozen or more of those. Even though I was mostly joking, my point wasn't that a factory rifle couldn't be competitive. It was that you might get another point or two with a rifle that you built to fit you precisely, and that is often the difference between match winner and second place at the upper levels. Bring all those 7-08s up to Montana this year and shoot the Iron Man with us. You might be the only one not worrying about your barrel getting too hot. :)

Ah yes...the cleaning. I try to do them at the range but not always. There is nothing worse that stinking up the house with the toxic aroma of Montana Extreme solvent. I close the door to my work room and open the window. Sometimes I use a fan to pull out the smell but my wife still asks what that awful smell is when she comes home from work. :) I tell her it is bathroom air freshener spray and a much better smell than when she paints her nails in the house.

I have done the Iron Man twice..'03 and '10. Look for a few of us Co. guys there next year. 8)
