I knew I had read the registration law somewhere, it's in the clubs website. Anyone visiting Hawaii must register there gun within 3 days and have a written statement from the club there shooting at, the penalty is severe for not doing so. Btw Trent as far as I know no other state has resorted to this level of silliness in gun control so it is not the same as traveling to any other state.

A nonresident alien may bring firearms not otherwise prohibited by law into the State for a continuous period not to exceed ninety days; provided that the person meets the registration requirement of this section and the person possesses:
(1) A valid Hawaii hunting license procured under chapter 183D, part II, or a commercial or private shooting preserve permit issued pursuant to section 183D-34;

(2) A written document indicating the person has been invited to the State to shoot on private land; or

(3) Written notification from a firing range or target shooting business indicating that the person will actually engage in target shooting.

The key part of the language is "meets the REGISTRATION requirement AND possesses the note from the shooting range"
What is not entirely clear in the wording is weather or not to register your gun you have to abide by the same rules as residents and have documents from a doctor as to your mental state and how long this process can take? From reading there laws the feeling I get is that if you bring a gun there they want to look and talk to you asap which is fine unless you run into some government employee on a power trip that wants to jerk you around. If you show up on a friday afternoon do you have to wait until monday and you've seen the local sheriff before you can legally fire the gun at a public range without permits? Lots of questions, not many answers.
Before traveling there I would be inclined to want to communicate directly with local cops and find out exactly what is expected and document said communications. That's what you do when you travel to Missouri right Trent?

What I'm talking about Trent is that it would be a little more difficult and possibly alot more so to travel to hawaii to shoot a silhouette match although it certainly sounds like a great vacation especially with a little fishing and diving thrown in after the matches.

I inquired yesterday through email about what was required when traveling to the kokohead range for a shooting tournament and recieved this today from officer Daniel J. Paperd.
Once the firearm arrives in the state you have 72 hours to registyer with the Honolulu Police Department/Firearms Unit. You must be at least 21 yrs old, born in the U.S or naturalized.

His spellcheck icon must be broken. Nothing on weather or not this is a streamlined version of registation for visitors but I'll check it out.

If that is the case (and I'm not 100% it is) then I would say that you folks would be bummed to go through this registration hassle down at the HPD. You would be pissed thinking about the beach time you are missing while standing in a long line down at the HPD. Maybe Hawaii isn't really the place to come for shooting???

The process sucks so much that I lost interest in shooting for about 10 years...but the bug hit me again a year ago.

This cop from firearms unit says that they have to be registered which backs up what is written in state statutes, that seems pretty much 100% to me. How long does the registration process take, give us the high points....actually give us the low points!

Since you spoke to someone in the firearms unit then you it's likely the correct info.

Sorry, I don't know much about the process that you would go through. It is different than buying a gun. The process is pretty drawn out to take ownership after purchase. Dude, it's late...I'm tired and the last thing I want to do is try to recall all the freakin steps to gun registration. Take my word...it bites. Hawaii is a wonderful place. The people are outstanding. It has all the goods to make it a paradise. It's just not a gun owners paradise. But, that's OK...the positives outweigh the negatives by far. Come visit...but leave your guns in the safe. Buy a spear gun or fishing rod...kite, surf board, snorkel, kayak...all kinds of fun stuff.

I sent another email yesterday asking for details from the firearms unit and didn't get anything back yet. Initially I thought that if you planned ahead and jumped through the hoops it would be possible to go on vacation to Hawaii and shoot a state match or some other tournament but maybe not. I'm getting the feeling the folks in charge there are totally against gun ownership and useage by law abiding citizens and do everything possible to discourage it, Florida is looking pretty good right now, got any extra rooms Mary?

Just got a reply from them, this guy is certainly brief with his answers. I guess you could ship your gun home after 3 days, that might be possible.

Quote; "All you need is a valid photo I.D. If you are going to be in the state for more than 3 days you must register the firearm"

What I get from that statement is full and complete registration process, totally out of the question for someone visiting for a week.{You would have to leave your gun with the HPD for the 2 week waiting period}.

kevin....if you can put up with 'the never ending construction' on the house (as Coates calls it, and all the critters...well come on but it is 48 miles to the nearest silhouette range for me.

I could be wrong, but I think the registration that you would need to do only involves one trip to the HPD with the gun. In and out. I'm pretty sure they would get your finger prints too.
