Finally got my Weatherby Mark XXII. Updated!

Post by Ghostofwar »

Yep. Finally got it. So far I haven't shot it, but I plan on taking it to the range with me when I go to the SRRPC match tomorrow. I don't have many different kinds of ammo laying around, but I'm going to test it out with some CCI Greentag, SK Standard+, and some Federal 711b. I'm hoping I can get some groups near the factory test target size, but I might have to wait for my order of Eley to come in before that happens. I'll update tomorrow. Anyone with one of these have any suggestions on ammo?

Those are half inch blocks. 5 shots at 50 meters!!!

An Anschutz by any other name...

Nice!

Well... it is called a Weatherby, but its no secret it is made by Anschutz. Even says so on the barrel and other areas on the action and trigger.

Congratulations, Is that your first Anschutz? Another easily obtainable ammunition that I've had good luck with is the yellow box Eley/Remington. Some lots of it are very close in quality to the much more expensive black box.

Well todays match went well with the new rifle. I took along a good bit of different ammo to test before the match. Out of the 5 or so types, it seems to like CCI Standard Velocity the best. This is some older CCI that I got a case of about 7 years ago. Its the white and blue paper box stuff and I shot the last four boxes today. Just doing some quick groups at the chickens and pigs, I could easily get groups with all shots touching in a ragged hole. More testing will be required to see what kind of groups I can get when I'm not in a hurry. The best part of the day is that I shot a 28 in hunter class to move me up to AAA. Thats not bad considering this is the 3rd match I have shot since coming back from a 5 year absence.

Congratulations on AAA!

Only my Evelio built, Nesika stocked 1712 feels better than a Weatherby XXII and absolutely nothing looks better, so these rifles are a great value! Enjoy.

Mine loves the Remington Target by Eley. I wish it liked CCI.
Evelio had savage mags made to work for sale in the Matketpklace, they work very nicely, and 4 were a tad more than ONE Weatherby.

Nice. I am going to have to check that out. Thanks for the tip.

Threads like this are what made me think about getting the Weatherby in the first place. Now look what I have!

Weatherby XXII

Post by mitch35 »

Enjoy your Weatherby. I bought one last spring and began to shoot for the first time since the Air Force in 1957. This winter I have spent some time with different ammo and I like the Eley target. Sport is ok but with the weatherby you have to clean the chamber about every 50 rounds or it won't extract. Blaubear (thanks!) parted with the target so I could get a good trial with that ammo.

I have changed the receiver screws to Allen socket screws and set the torque at 5 newton meters. Also, I changed the trigger spring to a much lighter spring and shimmed the barrel about two inches back from the for-end of the stock with two small pieces of last years laminated range card set in a V. One small piece on each side touching the bottom of the barrel.
http://www.jnpgunsprings.com provided the springs and screws.

The result at 50 yards is a group of 5 all touching measuring .5335 outside to outside at the most.

If I knew how to put a photo in I would.

Wondered how long it would take a retired engineer to start tinkering! Mitch has real purty XXII and is kind enough to let the rest of us play with it out at the River Range!
