Re: Patriotic!!!
The insanity is, they were criticized for being insensitive to the celebration of a different country's holiday.
Huh?
If I'm in Canada, I should be upset they don't celebrate the Fourth of July or Thanksgiving?
It just fails the logic test...
And I think it's totally cool if people want to celebrate additional holidays - but to expect others to honor them seems well outside the tarp...

The school system is wrong. On the other hand, in '72 students were expelled for wearing flag shirts because it was considered disrespecting the flag.

This ranks right up there with the crowd who thinks abortion is ok, but don't kill a terrorist or a death row inmate.

Re: Patriotic!!!
JB...the mind set to kill is unique. The difference between killing something you as a person can see, touch or talk with is not the same as killing something you have not seen. To any man saying (and even worse trying to force their opinion on any other person)abortion is right or wrong I have only one comment, "you try being pregnant for a full term."
This debate is off the topic but remians the same, principal of freedom of speech. To me the discussion within this school should not be about sensitivity to the Mexican culture, but about the students right to express their feelings for any country. Coates ran into similar situations at his high school wearing a Springfield Armory shirt, with nothing but their name on it. The occasional administrator would recognize the add and make him change or turn it inside out, but there were days that others did not say anything.
I am coordinator for shooting sports section of the Sunshine Games in Florida, we have the largest individual participation of any of the games (swimming, skating etc.), so we have our own shirt design for the participants. It is usually very cartoon in design, and the kids can wear them to school, even though they represent "guns". FIgure that one out, but hten it is state sponsored.

Re: Patriotic!!!
Almost as stupid is my friends son, who is a TA at the local college, telling everyone to stop sending him any email that is political in nature or against Obama or the administration in Washington, because it is frowned on by the school and that they MONITOR an individuals emails for it as it could cut funding to the college and may get him removed. If it was the college's email address maybe, just maybe I could understand it better... but it's to his personal Yahoo account.
It appears we Americans have already lost OUR right to free speech. My friends we are in big trouble.

Re: Patriotic!!!
Bob, so far as monitoring email, I've seen enough stuff caught in mail server spam filters to know that political messages are the least of it! We worried about anything involving violence, hate speech or graphic porn. Our attorney also advised us to filter out <ahem> "dating" messages since that could get our butts subpoenaed in a divorce case. The rest of it we didn't worry about - MYOB.
As for killing - unnecessary killing ( "to stop or prevent rape, murder, or breech of national security") is wrong. That's inconvenient sometimes, and this is where we start splitting hairs. Abortion I won't touch other than to say MYOB.

Re: Patriotic!!!
A little Mexican history for anyone that thinks cinco de mayo is a Mexican holliday. It was pushed by a Mexican beer company to boost their sales.
Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance and celebration nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed nationwide in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day.
El Grito every 16th of September is the Mexican Fiesta par excellence! On this day Mexicans all over the world celebrate Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule.
The school was wrong for sending only one bunch packing. Should have been all wearing Mexican flags and US flags or none.

Re: Patriotic!!!
Let me get this straight... so in this country we can have mobs of illegal immigrants band together and march through cities demanding rights in a country that they don't belong (legally), yet our children cannot wear an American flag on an INSIGNIFICANT holiday from another country?? What the holy hell is going on here? What are we doing to this country?? What messages are we teaching our kids!! We are slowly killing this country and all it stands for.
I seriously hope that administrator finds himself in the unemployment line! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! You've got to be kidding me!!

Re: Patriotic!!!
At least the district is trying to make up for this vice-principals lack of "cajones".
The message was delivered from Superintendent Wesley Smith through both a letter and a voicemail. Here is the full text:
Good evening. This is Dr. Wesley Smith, Superintendent of the Morgan Hill Unified School District. The Morgan Hill Unified School District does not prohibit nor do we discourage wearing patriotic clothing. The incident on May 5 at Live Oak High School is extremely unfortunate. While campus safety is our primary concern and administrators made decisions yesterday in an attempt to ensure campus safety, students should not, and will not, be disciplined for wearing patriotic clothing. This situation and our response are under review.
We know that this is an emotionally charged topic. We would ask you to encourage your students to be safe and focus on their academics while in school. If conversations and/or activities are necessary to express their feelings on this issue, we will find appropriate venues that do not disturb student learning or jeopardize the safety of our students. Furthermore, we encourage everyone to demonstrate respect for each other, open communication, and responsibility.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Dr. Wesley Smith
Superintendent

Re: Patriotic!!!
Seriously??? I think these kids need to talk to their parents so that the parents can explain to their kids that cinco de mayo is really an American drinking holiday. They don't even celebrate it in Mexico.
These Hispanic kids are acting like someone desecrated their National Independence day (which is Sept 16th). They are complete morons and forget what country they are in and the fact that Cinco De Mayo isn't a "real" holiday.

On Thursday, about 200 Mexican-American students walked out of class in protest of the flag clothing incident. Members of the group waved the Mexican flag and said they were marching for respect and unity. They also demanded the school suspend the boys who wore the U.S. flag-adorned clothing.

Re: Patriotic!!!
They should have considered them unexcused absences when the kids walked out of class and just gone on with teaching the other kids.
