spotting boards and lasers

I attended an IHMSA match this weekend and saw something that I thought was very clever. The shooter had a spotter . The spotter had a spotting board that sat in front of the shooter. The spotter would see the hit ( or miss) and shine a laser on the animal where the bullet struck. No verbal communication. With all the loud BS going on at some ranges I've started wearing ear plugs AND ear muffs to keep it out, but I can't hear my spotter. Would this system be legal in CLA? The loud conversation near the line is sometimes very distracting and double muffs for the shooter would help this out.

People have been using the spotter boards for decades at least, spotting the hits with push pins and showing the board to the shooter without comment, as you observed. This was common at IHMSA shoots in the late 70's-early 80's.. the laser is just a gimmicky replacement for the pushpins it seems to me.

Yes the incessant loud chatter and BS behind the line by both spotters and specators is indeed distracting and a real PITA, many times I have felt like telling the loudmouths to stuff a cork in it. It isnt just in Lever Action, it's in all disciplines of silhoette.

I have the same system for my son to use when he spots for me. The advantage in IHMSA tyoe shooting is that the poltter board is in front of you, near your ammo, so you dont have to contort yourself to look backwards to see your spotter. I see the same benefit, as I try to keep the plot board on the bench just in front of my timer. It really helps when shooting hig power on covered ranges!

I couldnt find anything in the rules prohibiting it for Cowboy, but that doesnt mean it would not be questioned.

My wife talked to the NRA Silhouette staff today and Connor saw no problem with the spotting board and laser.

We shot our big bore lever guns at an IHMSA match yesterday. The laser and spotting board is sssooooo much quicker and accurate than trying to explain the exact location of the hits or in my case misses. The boards are very well made and the animals turn both ways from either side of the board . Jim Fields in Oklahoma City at the OKC gun club makes them so they'll last forever and at a very reasonable price.
