Best Barrel Length?

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

Best Barrel Length?

Post by Mt_Medic31 »

I have a Rem700 XHR that Im going to build up into a .260 Rem for HP in the spring. Sometime in December I'm going to order a Lilja barrel for it, in a sporter contour. I was wanting some opinions on the best barrel length?

I have read the recent articles about how they get better acurracy out of shorter barrels (20") and the theory is less flex to contend with, making the barrel less finicky. But that was all with Bull barrels, and I was wondering if the same applies to sporter type barrels. I understand you sacrifice some velocity, but I will happily do that for a more consistent barrel. I was thinking along the lines of 22" for my barrel.

Let me know your experience, research. thanks!

For a 260 I would not go with less than 24" long and a no. 5 or no. 4 contour, preferably the no.5 with a carbon fiber stock.

Evelio,
Sounds cool. Other than carbon fiber, what do you recommend. All the carbon fiber ones I see cost a fortune. Manners stocks are the only ones I see that make it as a Drop In, but they run about $500 in the Carbon fiber. I'm on a budget, and was considering the B&C A1 style stock, fiberglass, 2.25 pounds, and still fits the specs for Hunting class. Plus I can get it for a little over $200.

The B&C stock will work fine, but at 2 plus pounds you better go with a no.4 barrel contour. Still I would not go less than 24" long, you need all the velocity that you can get on this caliber for knock down power at 500 meters.
